The Roman Odeum of Nikopolis is a remarkable amphitheatre, and very well preserves. It situated 200 meters west to the Western Gateway of Nikopolis. It contains around 1,500 sits and it is opened to the public (free entrance). The only two problems are that it does not have easy access to vehicles and has no parking nearby. You can drive through the Western Gateway on a narrow path. The entrance is located on the south side of the site. From the top, you have fanstatic panoramic view over the Ambracian Gulf and the mountains around. Don't miss a visit in the "Big Theatre" of Nikopolis that is also called The Roman Odeum of Nikopolis, 1.5 km North. Bottom line - a "must see site" in Preveza Area!! It lies at the centre of the town, on the west side of the Early Christian wall, adjacent to the Roman agora (forum). It was used for lectures, literary and musical contests and theatrical performances during the Nea Aktia religious games honouring Apollo. Being adjacent to the agora, it probably operated as a bouleuterion (council chamber) for the remaining months of the year. It was built during the reign of Augustus (early first century AD) and frequently repaired and remodelled in the late second century – early third century AD. The odeon consisted of the cavea, the orchestra and the scene. The cavea contained 19 rows of seats and was divided into two sections by a small horizontal central corridor. You help yourself and take your safety in your own hands as there are clear drops and holes in places that would not suit young kids without close supervision. But amazing for those with an interest and who don’t like the crowds. I was able to wander about with the place to myself. A hidden gem!
