Truly amazing extensive of a little-known ancient Roman city. The trouble is that it's quite overrun with waist-high, dense, prickly grass (upon visit in May). Gardeners were trying to fight off the Mediterranean jungle, not a small task. Many parts were still inaccessible, although definitely atmospheric. We spent several hours around the scattered remains - the Odeon, nympheum, cemetery, a very long city wall and frescoed villa - all scattered among fields and cow pastures. Impressive, should be treasured and kept up. The archeological is a bit further down the main to Preveza, with the finest art pieces. Very useful explanatory panels on site. Entrance to the odeon seems to be paying but the booth wasn't open when we came early in the morning. Very beautiful historical place. There is going reconstructions, but overall the place is amazing Beautiful Roman with a fantastic Domus, Basilica mosaics, parts of the Decumanus Maximus and the Odeon, and giant outstanding Roman walls. Unfortunately there is no public transport to and fro, and it all lies in a state of abandonment. The path to reach the perimetral walls passes externally along and on the nearby exposing you to the danger of being hit by cars. Also if you come here dress accordingly, it's raw terrain , bushes and there are venomous snakes around, we saw one albeit small black viper. Nice place full of history, you can also visit de with the same ticket. A must visit for the history geeks. Although the size of the Byzantine walls is an 1/3 portion of the original Roman one and with the same 8€ you also get access to the a few km south. Overall, it's not a well maintained tourist site. The odeon theater is the 'highlight' but it is no Coloseum. Renovated ruins. Used in 1960's for performances. Now abandoned. Impressive Roman archaeological site. You will find here a villa, a basilic, a public fountain and a well preserved road. There are also some mosaic. The is good for even families. The area is huge but the ways and the google navigation is trash. There are tickets to enter to the to the roman theatre and the nearby. It was 8€/person. Unlike the museum, the is not well marked, parts are not accessible to visitors even though they should be, because a for the sites is also bought in the museum. Nevertheless, the mosaics are extraordinary and should be visited. 8 euro entry fee, but not well kept, weeds invaded the site, such a shame. Beautiful mosaics, and hopefully, one day, it will become more worthwhile. Work still in progress. A place you should visit, if you are travelling around Preveza and interested in historical places. I lived in Greece for years and never knew of this place and the history behind it. Perhaps we learned about it in school but I didn't pay attention. I have seen the signs before and the name on the map. On our way to Corfu from Lefkada, I looked it up and suggested to my husband that we stop to check it out and I am so glad we decided to stop. Amazing history. The walls and go for miles. Although now, you can tell it was beautiful when it was new and populated. We went past the first entrance where apparently there is a and you have to pay to enter. We drove down the where the stadium used to be. Unfortunately that area was closed but we were able to walk around and take some photos from a distance. Then we drove back to tje next entrance and parked where there was a main gate. We were able to go through a gate and walk around, climb steps and explore a little bit. It was beautiful! Read the history of this place before going in. It's just amazing to know what happened in that area BC and later on with Christianity. The Archaeological of Nicopolis is quite badly represented on Google Maps, which makes it lesser known with not many visitors. However, the is truly a hidden gem worth visiting if your just passing through, or if you have a couple of hours to spare. The is badly represented, with the numerous structures shown as independent sites. This is not the case, all of these are part of the Archaeological and accessible for an €8 that is sold here. When you arrive, there is a small car park which is free and safe, next to a small booth with an employee. After purchasing your ticket, you walk to the extensive of a Roman Domus. Here you can find a number of very well preserved floor mosaics, a must-see, view the walls nearby, and walk through the of the Domus and a Basilica. After visiting the Roman Domus, you go to the next structure, the Roman Odeon, by car. Although it's small, the is easily accessible to all vehicles. The Roman Odeon offers the most beautiful views of the whole site. You are free to explore the structure yourself, and you can climb to the top of for breathtaking views of Nicopolis and the surrounding area. Afterwards, you can continue by car again to the Roman Theatre, and Roman Stadium, located beside eachother. The Theatre is similar to the Roman Odeum, and the Stadium is unfortunately overgrown and not properly excavated. Finally, with the same you bought by the Roman Domus, you can visit the Archaeological if Nicopolis down the road, which is also very much worth seeing.
