Wonderful architecture - half-sunken monolithic structure, tilted into the sea like a periscope(Underwater window 11x3.4m). Name meaning - 'Under' - both 'below' and 'wonder' in Norwegian. ~40 guests per night. This is by far the most beautiful I've ever been. The location is really unbelievable: the dining room is 5 meters below the sea level and you can see the water and the fish through a large wall of glass. The atmosphere is very relaxed and quiet: the waiters and the sommeliers were all caring and kind. The food too is great, they use mainly local products in their dishes. The menù is made of 11 courses (it took about 2 and a half hours to complete it) so in the end you're full even though the servings are small. The cost of the menù is 1950 NOK (about 180€), which in my opinion is correct given the uniqueness of the place and the quality of the food. It has been a truly memorable experience. Bland and/or oversalted food served in a spectacular venue by a untrained in hospitality. They enforce policies for some but not others and a wisp of arrogance permeates the welcome upstairs through the dining room to a kitchen full of unsmiling cooks. No head chef the night we were there - Someone should buy the place and start over… We travelled to Norway specifically to go to Under. From New Zealand. Worth it? Absolutely! If the architecture and the view 5m under the ocean doesn't completely blow you away, the food and will. Because we had travelled so far, we went on both the Friday night and for the Saturday lunch. On both occasions the welcome was warm, the food sublime. Upon entering the building we were told about the history of this unique place (how it was built etc.) before being guided downstairs for an aperitif. The food and the is exceptional. Every dish was explained to us before serving. As a pairing, we took the alcohol free option, the juice pairing. Each juice was tailored by the sommelier to the respective part of the to fit the taste. While reserving the table, I communicated my gluten intolerance. The dishes were slightly adapted to make them gluten free and the self made gluten free bread was the best bread I ever had. What makes Under unique is the combination of great service, delicious food and the atmosphere. Having dinner 5.5 meters under water with a direct view at the sea life is just breathtaking. This place is one of a kind. Lovely staff, amazing decor where starfish, jellyfish and all sorts of other fish are the actors. Amazing 10 course dinner with wine pairing as well. We brought our 10 and 14 year old girls along for their first ever fine dining and they also loved it. No kids but they liked 8 out of 10 dishes and we did not mind finishing the other two for them.
