Very popular, luckily had a seat as I thought I'd treat myself! £17.99 small plate roast, then apple/cinnamon crumble washed down with a limeaid. Staff friendly, patient whilst I chose then waited for space for my 😆 parking spaces, near hikes so book a and work up an appetite! Dog too Have been here twice recently. Prior to that it was years since our last visit, probably before the days of Google Reviews even 😂. Even back then though, I always remembered this place has great food. And I have a memory. It's fantastic food 👍. Plenty of choice, with a different Sunday menu, there aren't many gastro pubs better than this one. Portions are large, with a smaller option for lower price also available. Staff are and well presented in their uniforms, and the location is spot on. Great for walkers, dogs, etc too. It's a testament to the owners that this pub is still going because it is so remote. We went on a Wednesday evening and it was pretty full. Definitely recommend booking a table. Oh, and if you like Yorkshire then definitely this is the place to go 😁. 🍽️🍽️🍽️🍽️🍽️ What a fantastic find! Beautiful roadside inn and restaurant. Very dog friendly, ask for the doggie menu. I had the corned beef pie with mash and peas, and my wife had yorkshire turkey wrap. Both were excellent. Abby loved 1/2 of my corned beef. We had the toffee with custard and ice cream. Heavenly! Great service, people are in the whole place. Great afternoon meal. Highly recommend! I might be judging based on my time as a server in America, but was almost nonexistent, meats were dry(roast meal beef/pork, short crust pie), my husband was covered in dog hair after 2 white shepherds came into the bar area & were face height at our table, finished with our drinks & my husband had to go to the bar after waiting & waiting, just to get water. The dogs in the bar around food are unacceptable...out on the patio, fine....but NOT around food. Always a great experience when visiting the Crooked Billet, foot is always well cooicked and portions are huge, specially traditional Yorkshire dishes with a emphasis on everything Yorkshire pudding! Staff are always and helpful and prices are incredibly reasonable given the quality of the food. All in all a great experience We will be back many times I'm sure Keap up the work all at the Croocked Billet. Top notch. Booking is highly recommended, saw several tables turned away as the restaurant was so busy (which is a very sign) Service was fantastic, staff are very attentive. Food is extremely tasty and the portions satisfying. All the dishes were well presented. Desserts are heavenly. Eating out on my own , picked crooked billet. Seated quickly and made to feel welcome. Picked the two courses small portions._17.99 as can be seen by the pictures they are a size. This place does get busy. Plenty of parking great food. Hot and tasty 😋 Definitely coming again Parked up the motorhome on the grass at the rear of the car park and did the 5K walk to Saxton and the Lead church then dinner in the pub. Started the traditional way with Yorkshire and gravy then steak pie for me and roast dinner for the blonde, finished by sharing a marmalade and whiskey sponge and custard. The food and were outstanding the steak pie was packed with soft and tender beef with a proper pastry crust and proper chips whilst the roast meat vegetables and roasties was declared delicious. The was to die for. All served up with a very house wine. I found this place by looking for food when I was working in a near bye city. This was the very best place I ate in the UK. I loved the Yorkshire and to top it off chocolate honeycomb cheesecake is the very best. What a amazing experience, a great ambiance, attentive very curtious staff and a realy interesting menu. The food was all cooked to perfection and was presented piping hot and in very time. I realy can't recommend the Crooked Billet enough. The prices are very competitive and drinks prices were also very reasonable. We will definitely be returning in the very near future. Ten out of ten all of you at the Crooked Billet, your a credit to Yorkshire. As a side note some of the largest portions I've ever had! Hope you are hungry! A must is anything Yorkshire pudding, you can have them as starters mains and deserts! If you have them for all courses you get your photo on the wall! Very busy and loud, food is presented like Gordon Ramsey but the taste akin to whether spoons, never had broccoli that has zero taste, also a bit underdone, the sauce on the salmon was too underwhelming. The lady instructing the others was the highlight, she was very and efficient, but the waitress not so good, she almost threw my plate down like it was the dogs dinner and just rushed, unpleasant. Lovely building though and countryside with a nice beer garden. In summary, the meals need to be better thought out, and improved, and this could be one of the best places to eat around the York area. Called in on a Tuesday lunchtime to find the place very busy. Unusual for most gastro pubs in the sticks. Got a for two. Prompt service, nice beer and excellent food. What more could you wish for. Only gave 4* as we picked a near the squeaky kitchen door. Our choice! Highly recommend and will be returning. Ensure you book before you go. We were lucky to get a table. Went here just on the off chance as driving down from Thirsk on way home to London had our dog with us so needed a dog pub. Quite busy but staff really nice and helpful three lovely young ladies and standards of a more upmarket restaurant than a country pub. Would certainly recommend buy advice is book Breakfast treat 6th September 2025 , 09.15am . Went for the Billet breakfast , added Yorkshire for an extra £3.00 . Breakfast served inside the Yorkie included beans , hash brown , bacon , mushrooms , sausage , tomato , scrambled egg , and a slice of crusty bread . The scrambled egg , was the best I've had on a full English . All washed down with a glass of fresh orange , and 2 cappuccinos . And my little dog enjoyed a sausage , served in a special dog bowl . Fed for the day , excellent value all round . I'll certainly be having another one , sometime in the future . Delicious fish pie filled with huge prawns. Huge, good-quality butchers burger & homemade slaw. Partner had the jerk chicken burrito- equally as tasty. All very generous portions, so arrive hungry 😄 Chocolate Galaxy brownie to finish (only just had room!) Staff all and polite.
