An interesting place to visit and a quick stop as you peddle the Danube. There are places to park your bike and walk across the Danube on a set of well places granite boulders. In the summer or dry periods the Danube will disappear into the ground. A great place to cool off on a hot summer day. Silence, undisturbed nature not far from urban haos. This is a true natural phenomenon. During the dryer season of the year, the Danube disappears completely underground, only to reappear in the Aachtopf 12 km away as the crow flies. It takes the about 60 hours to cover that distance. Reason is the karst formation of that region. When visiting in the winter, the riverbed will be carrying water, sometimes so much that it floods the extensive meadows between Immendingen and Tuttlingen. So to really get the whole experience of the disappearing Danube river, you should visit in a dry summer and return in winter when the water is back above ground. Really nothing to see but if you like geology this is a special place. Those party of the Danube will eventually completely sublimate into the Rhine. WOW It‘s not only an impressive natural phenomenon to see but also a nice resting spot while on the Danube bicycle tour. When dry, you can hike for a quite a while on the riverbed in both directions. Signs with an explanation to the site are available and are interesting to read, even for kids. Great experience. During the summer you can walk on the dry rivrr bed until the suddenly appears. There is a path that you can walk alongside the that leads to a nice little cafe. From the cafe you can walk the paved cycle path back to the parking lot. It' s a very spectacular place, the water from a Danube's affluent, goes underground and then after a few hundred metres it reappears and flow into the Danube. It's a very developed place for hiking, cycling and resting in nature. It's a small parking lot and few wood tables for food. Very interesting, a nice walk and on a dry bed where suddenly you find a full that vanishes into a small hole! We were in mid-summer, after very little rain, so there we had a good effect.
