Kleiner Tierpark mit vielen sehr besonderen und seltenen Tierarten, die sonst in zoologischer Haltung teilweise einmalig in Europa sind (z.B. Fuchskusu, Fleckenmusang, Zibetkatze, Palmenroller). Allgemein ist der Zoo für die größe sehr artenreich, neben den oben genannten Arten gibt es Dachse, Stachelschweine, Weißkopfmakis, Katas, Kapuzineraffen, Papageien, einige Katzenarten und einige Haustierarten. Es gibt zudem ein paar interessante Vergesellschaftungen, das bedeutet, dass unterschiedliche Tierarten in einem Gehege zusammenleben z.B. Katas, Pfauen und Agutis oder Hühner und Meerkatzen. Die Tiere selbst wirken sehr aufgeweckt und neugierig und viele von ihnen interagieren gerne mit den Besuchern, wenn man an zu den Gehegen geht. Ansonsten sind die Gehege leider oftmals recht klein und etwas heruntergekommen, im allgemeinen wirkt der Zoo leider etwas in die Jahre gekommen. :/ Auch die Ausdrucke an den Gehegen sind teilweise so ausgeblichen, dass man sie nicht mehr lesen kann. Tierpark Donnersberg is a tiny zoo (and I mean tiny) just on the edge of the town of Rockenhausen, reachable from Frankfurt or other nearby cities. If you are not a zoo enthusiast, this place offers little to draw you here. Its popular creatures, like the ubiquitous meerkat and ring-tailed lemur for example, can be seen in many other collections. The draw of this place, however, is those unusual creatures held in few, or no, other European collections. These include the Sumatran palm civet (of kopi luwak fame), African civet (whose musk is used in perfumes), screaming hairy armadillos, brush-tailed possum, greater grison (a ferret-like animal with a colour pattern reminiscent of a honey badger), and the Amur leopard cat. The keepers here were very obliging to help me photograph some of the rarities, as many animals were habituated to their presence. As such, I felt privileged, something which rarely happens in larger zoos unless you pay more. Some of the animals were off exhibit, such as the tenrecs (hibernating) and short-beaked echidnas (sick), but all of the others were periodically active, allowing prolonged and uninterrupted views. If you need sustenance while there, there is a small shop selling ice creams and such, and shops are a very short walk away. There is no gift shop of any sort. Format is mostly a series of cages (some very bare; one had just a ladder and a space in the rafters for its inhabitants), and the monkeys and ravens seemed bored. This detracted from the enjoyment of the visit, but this collection has much promise to increase the quality of its enclosures. The tropical house contains the exhibits for most of the zoo's small creatures, from the fennec to the armadillos and tamarins, as well as the nocturnal area for the echidnas, brush-tailed bettong, and southern tamandua. Cat lovers will find much to see here, although there are no big cats (the largest cats are the caracal and serval), as will primate lovers (despite their apparent boredness). It goes without saying that if you are a small mammal enthusiast, you will get a lot out of your visit. The zoo is reachable from Rockenhausen station (with indirect trains to Frankfurt via Bingen and Mainz) by a ten minute walk along the street. There is parking for those driving, and is conveniently located near the autobahn. Wir waren zum zweiten Mal in diesem Zoo und können die negativen Bewertungen nicht nachvollziehen. Die Tiere wirken sehr gepflegt, was man an ihrem Fell, ihrer Verspieltheit und ihrem Verhalten erkennt. Die Mitarbeiter kümmern sich fürsorglich um die Tiere und sind im Umgang mit den Besuchern freundlich und hilfsbereit. Dieser Zoo beherbergt viele seltene Tiere, die man sonst nirgendwo sieht. Wir empfehlen jedem, der dieses wunderbare Projekt unterstützen möchte, den Zoo zu besuchen und finanziell zu helfen, damit er erhalten bleibt.
