A lovely little railway. Lots of helpful, friendly volunteers, all smartly suited and booted. We joined at Ongar but soon found out about parking difficulties eventually finding a place in the library public car park a few minutes down the road. A quick jog back to catch our steam-pulled through a couple of miles of Essex countryside, just a few minutes stop at North Weald before returning on the same this pulled by a diesel loco. We liked the Thomas-lookalike engine, the good signage, helpful volunteers and the pretty countryside over our short ride. Quite expensive but we expect it costs a lot to run a railway. Recommended. It's a great little line,what I like is the enthusiasm that the place gives off,services are ran by diesel and and its just a nice trip down memory lane.who doesn't want to in a slam door carriage and feel the spring in a 70's coach seat..excellent, you can taste the age that the come from in the sights and smells..Also riding the vintage buses between epping,North weald and Ongar is a special treat to.long may these experiences continue. And of course lovely countryside of Essex. Visited on Friday 20th Sep 2024 for the E∨ Autumn Diesel Gala. It was my second visit to this preserved and it was as good as the first. Parking is an issue, as parked in Ongar, where you have to park in public parking some distance from the station. There is an alternative on these gala days where you can access North Weld via a heritage shuttle bus service from an underground station. They had guest locos and a detailed timetable to enable you to schedule what you wished to run behind. Only 2 stations but a decent length of track and North Weld has a decent cafe and shop/stall again on Gala days. You would need to check what runs on non-gala days but either way, you and anyone you bring will have a fun experience here. As ever the volunteers are what make these places with dedication and knowledge. Cab rides are available if that takes your fancy (at a fee) We had the fish n chips lunch. We were pulled by both and diesel locos. The whole day was so good. There is plenty to see in the way of old locos and memorabilia. It's definitely worth the visit. We started our journey at North Weald where parking is available onside and surrounding area. The day out gets five stars - but - to get the most of the visit I’d recommend using both the and the buses. The ticket covers both and the 339 bus is a great ride. On the day we visited were not serving Epping Forest meaning a long wait at North Weald, but the 339 filled this in perfectly. The journey was great, very relaxing and the vast Essex countryside gives weight to this - incredible to think that this was part of the tube many years ago! There is so much history on display, from representing the Great Eastern Railway, to the LNER, right up to British Rail and of course London Transport. This is unique to capture so many different genres in its and it all works so well, the mainline steam/diesel across to London Transport buses. A winning combination. Great day out and top marks, cheers! What a fantastic railway. The staff are so friendly and helpful, each is lovely to look at. The are out of this world. Always a special day out. A unique heritage rides with options to on diesal or trains. The itself is very comfortable and it was so cool seeing the head carriage uncoupling at north weald and ongar! There was lots to do at each station. At north weal station, I walked it to the oldest wodden church in the world, Greenstead Church after walking through a field of sunflowers. The scenery is very amazing, with horses right by you and the people are very friendly. The vintage bus was also a highlight as well as looking at the north weald airstrip, though directions on the inside of the airstrip is non existant. The highlight of the was going on the as the locomotive that pulled our carriage had inspired thomas the tank engine! The staff were very friendly in stations and in the and buses! Definitely worth the visit! Not worth the money. Seeing the pull up was amazing and only reason it would get a star at all. Staff friendly but then the actual Christmas what a yawn. It was good for like 10 minutes then got same old same old. In side looked quiet nice but "voice over guys" and his "jokes" just became boring very quickly and by the end the best bit was the toilets at the station. They actually was better than him. It needs a bit more interaction as its clearly a recording and not a good one at that. Felt like a waste of £50 for two of us. Would I recommend it, not really. It just lacks. We go through north weald to some useful info about like how the yard is used to restore trains, Great info then points out many cups of tea drunk just trashes it. I know this volunteer ran and people give up their to do it. There is potential to make it a enjoyable event. Looking out at open fields in the dark with the same old lighting effect. A few little Christmas villages would of made it better Great day at the little railway. My only negative is there needs to be more on the trains...overall fabulous day Went on the for the first today for the Halloween event and was so impressed with the whole experience. All the staff were absolutely amazing and the and old London buses were brilliant. Will be back for a general and also the Christmas event. Thank you to everyone who helped make our day so enjoyable We had a wonderful evening on the Epping & Ongar light train. The is warm and welcoming with plenty of staff available to give directions. The food and bar area is ideal to wait in for the train. There is a fantastic selection of food available and a well stocked bar. Once on the train, which is very cosy and warm, the lights and voice over man encourage you to join in with singing and games, creating a festive atmosphere. Everyone on our carriage really enjoying singing along. The volunteers check in with everyone ensuring everyone is happy. We had a great and the kids absolutely loved it.
