We would have loved to have taken the to Cheltenham and back however there was no way we could leave the dogs in the car for 3 hours in this heat. What a lovely old restored and though, they’ve done a wonderful job. I was happy just to see it and get some photos and video of it leaving. I will definitely be back to take the return trip at some point. I went to this place with my brother in law and we had a fantastic day out and as this was my first time on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire railway it was 😁smiles all day and it won't be my last time 😀 to quote "I'LL BE BACK" 😄🚂🚂lovely staff and clean and tidy stations / toilets 👏 well done everyone involved 👍 What a lovely place to visit. We had a trip on the Santa train. Easy parking, easy access Friendly staff, lovely trains and a chance to chat to the main man himself - Father Christmas. A great day out. Now I wonder if he can get my present down the chimney? Arriving at the railway at Cheltenham Racecourse, I was in for a treat. This was to be my third trip out on the Gloucester Warwickshire Railway, and what an experience it was. I purchased my ticket online, so no queuing was involved. I parked the car in the large carpark, overlooking Cheltenham Racecourse, and walked down the ramp to the station. Filling up her water tank was our for the day. Along with other travellers, I took some photos before finding a seat with a window. I thought if I sat towards the rear of the outbound, then I'll be close to the for the return journey from Broadway. It was not long, and soon, we were steaming through open countryside, stopping at a number of stations en route. We passed through the Greet Tunnel, which is curved and believed to be the second longest tunnel on any heritage railway. After departing Toddington, we passed over the Stanway Viaduct, which has recently been repaired and looks very smart. In just over an hour, we arrived at Broadway, where the was turned around. I took some more photos, but with a cold wind, I was not standing out for long. The sun was shining, and the day felt warm out of the wind, but in it, cold. Soon, we were making our way towards Toddington. The scenery is flat for miles, looking across farmland with various crops growing, including vegetables. Arriving at Toddington, the was scheduled for a 45-minute stop, so I got off to find somewhere to have lunch. I had not realised how large or interesting Toddington is. There is a large cafe with indoor and outdoor parking; a reasonable sized carpark; a narrow gauge railway which was not open yet; a diesel shed museum, as well as a small signal box. Buying a hot drink, using my travel mug again, I sat outside to eat my lunch while waiting for the to depart. In clouds of and noise, it set off towards Cheltenham. I planned to wait for the "Bubble" car on its return journey to Cheltenham. While I was walking around the museum, I noticed it arrived and it was still at the station. Feeling a little chilled, I walked smartly to the and found a seat on it at the rear of the train. This would mean that I was sitting behind the driver for the return leg. I say "Bubble" car as it was a loaned unit from another heritage line, while the GWR DMU was being overhauled. We were soon on our way towards Broadway, looking back along the track as we rumbled along. It was a great feeling and the was full of passengers of all ages. We had a short stop at Broadway before continuing along the track towards Cheltenham. Whike we waited at Broadway, we chatted with the driver, who usually drove trains, but welcomed the opportunity to drive the DMU, as he was clean and had a chance for a break between duties. With a engine, there is a lot to do each shift and can be tiring. Sitting behind the driver, I had a "driver's" eye view of the line ahead, especially as we approached the viaduct and tunnel. Soon, we were slowing down to enter Cheltenham Racecourse after a wonderful day out. Riding in the "Bubble" brought back many childhood memories, riding a DMU from Cardiff to Barry. Walking back to the car, I reflected on my trip, the fine weather out of the wind, and thanked the staff for a memorable day out. Thank you to everyone who works on the GWR for making everyone's day a special one, filled with memories. It is amazing how conversations can be entered into while travelling on heritagextrains any where in the country. Lovely travelling along the railway with excellent linear walks between stations, or circular ones back to your starting point. Beautifully kept stations, and wonderful helpful volunteers to add to the positive experience. Such a good day out. We visited the week before half term so not too busy, lots of seats to pick. Limited space for wheelchairs though, so get there early if you want to try and secure a space. arrives 20 mins before it departs. Plenty of parking at Cheltenham and the walk into Broadway is lovely. Lots of nice little shops and cafes to browse/eat at in Broadway too. Easy to get tickets on the day, but definitely allow more time for getting them before you board. Wonderful at the end of the heritage line in the beautiful village of Broadway. The is immaculately maintained and has excellent toilet facilities and cafe with seating both inside and out. It really felt like I'd stepped back in time and we thoroughly enjoyed our short wait for the back to Cheltenham. Be warned however. If you're elderly or have limited mobility, the is about 3/4 mile outside the village of Broadway and there's virtually no taxi service. Tricky if you find walking difficult. Great ride. Recommend to start at Toddington if your in a motorhome like us as there is loads of unrestricted height parking. Get a day rover for the whole line. Food is basic and buffet very limited.
