I had some time before taking my plane back to Switzerland in the evening of the second Friday of January 2025 and had decided to go by this institution, located in the middle of the wetlands on the eastern side of river Tagus. Access is via a 12 km dirt road with pot holes and this rainy morning I was glad having a rental car rather than my own. Just when taking off from the main road I met a dove trainer with his being released to fly back home to his farm, which was a first for me. You thereafter pass saltwater ponds populated by thousands of like ibises, herons, storks, waders and various predators before arriving at the EVOA visitor's center. After having paid your entrance fee you can hike the paths in the area on yourself or participate in a guided tour. I did both and can clearly recommend the guided tour with very knowledgeable guides. There are waters with different, regulated depths allowing you to study the various species in their real habitat. If you plan to take photographs bring your longest lens, preferably at least 800 mm in full frame equivalent. For the hungry visitor there is a small restaurant. Overall a magnificent experience. I will certainly return! First off don't use Google maps to get you directly there, we ended up at a locked gate on two occasions. Follow the signs to Cabo, right at the end of the bridge out of Villa France on the N10, then it will be signposted to the reserve. It is a 12km drive down a mainly hard packed dusty road, a few holes but OK, it is used a lot by school buses on trips so is looked after. The staff at the visitor centre are great, informative and helpful. We opted to wander around the "course" to the various hides on our own but guides are available to help spot species and give more info. Cell phone coverage is poor and they had trouble with getting reception for the card machine so might be worth having some cash, we paid €14 each at the time of this review. Hard to plan a birding day there. 9am not much use as an opening time." My flight was delayed and I managed to arrange a visit last Friday. My experience was horrible, the place is filled with wasps the whole place is surrounded by wasp colonies. All the sightseeing booths have wasps in them making the trip useless as the sanctuary is designed I'm a way that one can only look at from the booths. There's no Nature just dry dusty track with couple of usual ducks. Wasn't worth 15eur at all! Very friendly and welcoming staff. I got there with an Uber, which was an interesting trip. In may there wasn't too many people around. In fact I only encountered 2 other groups, while being on my own. The reserve is fab for taking pictures of animal wildlife, especially birds. A very nice place for bird & nature lovers. Also good cabin for making pictures of (Flamingo's, Kingfisher etc). The centre is nice to visit with an exhibition and very friendly people who serve you a cup of coffee and a pastel de nata or a tosta mista (like yesterday 😉) I just love to be there! Osprey, marsh harrier, bonelli's eagle, flamingo, purple swamphen .... 14€ entry fee, but you get 6 birding cabins with excellent views on the lagoon. Absolutely worth it's money. This is the best natural reserve we have ever been! We joined the tour and saw all the special including purple swanphens and squacco heron. The tour guide Mauro really made the whole experience really special, thank you for hosting us and sharing the stories and information with us. Feel really nice to see the staffs are extremely caring to the and people, it’s a great example of co-existing with animals and show respect to them :) If you’re around, don’t miss out! Little known spot but well worth a visit. I always noticed this area which looks beautiful when flying into Lisbon during the approach to the airport and managed to locate it on Google Maps. Then I discovered there was a bird watching center - EVOA. We visited as a family and it is great to show kids the huge diversity of they have around. This is a great weekend walk / activity. Great place with very friendly people! At the day of our visit was raining but we can see a lot of (mostly at the shallow lake) and had a really good time.
