A nice place where one can get information about and maybe can see one (of those in the sanctuary) if lucky enough... Preservation of the Greek Shepherd dog breed (ancient dog breed) is carefully taken care there... Tours every complete hour only and no coffee or snacks... A must to be informed about the conservation and the wildlife. Be mindful of the time since there is a strict schedule that you must adhere to. The ticket from here is also valid for the bear conservation area and the museum in Nimfeo We were very excited to the Wolf and Lynx sanctuary. It was a bit of a let down to be honest with you. . The are in enclosed fence pen. It was very hard to see any as they were hiding well away from the viewing path. Did manage to see one and a jackle which came to the fence. Great scenery, it was totally worth it, I really really reccomend going there amazing, also the guidance was totally amazing, we learned many new things when we went there with myself school Don't miss it if you a nearby place I have wanted to come here since the sanctuary first opened but as the location is in a remote village in the northern Greek mountains, it has taken me that long. So the expectations were high and the disappointment commensurate. Given that we would be visiting in the Christmas period, I rang twice (from London) to verify opening times etc. I was reassured that all would work as expected but could tell that the lady answering the phone was rushing it. So on the day, we drove hundreds of kilometers and finally made it. Upon arrival in Nymfaio, we see two different signs for Arktouros that take you in opposite directions; incomprehensible. We pick one and drive there, only to be met by a man who works for the sanctuary but turned us away in a manner that showed exactly what idiots he thought we were. He barked at us sarcastically that everyone knows bears hibernate (yes, we were aware but wanted to the which, er, remains open to visitors all year around). I asked him what we could expect as visitors, but it was clear he was there to turn cars away, and to do so in the rudest way he could master. So to spare you going through the same treatment, here is the basic info: the “sanctuary” consists of three “centres”: one is an information and gift shop in the of the village in an old mansion called “Nikios Scholi”, where you get a guided tour looking at posters and watch a film about the centre; in the same village but on the outskirts, there is the where they look after the bears and this is only open in the summer months; and finally, some 13km away, just beyond the village of Agrapidies, there is a where they look after the wolves, jackals and lynxes, not forgetting their big income-maker, the gift centre. We visited the first and third. We thought the guided tours were well meaning but a bit basic, aimed at school children. I was expecting something more thoughtful and scientific. They kept repeating that they are all volunteers but I felt there was a whole lot of room for improvement. We paid €32 for the four of us and in terms of animals, we saw two and one lynx (and a Greek friend told me that we were lucky to see as many as two species on the same day). €11 per animal then, I will leave it to you to decide if it is value for money given that you don’t to look at the posters (which by the way are the only things that are translated in English as no tour is conducted in any language but Greek). Nymfaio village is incredibly beautiful and I am tempted to say that we would like to return one summer day when it might hopefully be less busy than the day we visited. Unfortunately, as with most things, it is the people who make the memories. I can’t speak about the conservation staff but the Arktouros visiting staff - volunteers or not - could be doing a far better job. Amazing experience, especially for the kids. Make sure you buy something from the gift shop if you want to contribute to their work. The lady were in a singing mood today so they graced us with a beautiful howling (see video) You have to remember it is not a zoo, so the bears ( around 20) are housed in natural environments and it was a pleasure to see them going about their Bear business at a Bear pace. The guide was informative and they are doing great work protecting a precious species. All the family enjoyed it. It's a bit of a hike if carrying a small infant from the car park to the reception point so be prepared to carry the young. You can bearly see any here. I don't recommend visiting here even if it's on your way Beautiful spot. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Today it was too hot to spot the wolves, but we saw a large Lynx resting on a tree. Congrats to Arcturos on their important mission and actions to preserve wildlife. We were able to see the female and lynxes upon their being summoned by our guide. They approached the fence! Close enough for us to be swept in a magical world! To connect to wildlife! Amazing job Arcturos!! Great place to visit! Entry is included with the bear conservation site! As they roam free your chances of seeing them vary! At the moment you probably won’t see any as it is way too hot for them! We saw jackals and lynx as well as these huge Greek shepherd dogs! The guide on our 55 minutes tour was extremely knowledgeable and spotted that we wouldn’t have spotted in a lifetime! Thank for the great tour! Beautiful stunning setting, important work of the NGO. Not very family-kids friendly ironically although I can see school classes would be ok. 20min static lesson then 2 min walk to see 2 open air areas to see 1 Lynx 1 wolf. No walking around. They were understaffed so maybe better when more staff. Excellent gift shop. Πολύ όμορφο σημείο, εντός δάσους με οξιές περίπου 20 λεπτά με τα πόδια από το Νυμφαίο. Εξαίρετος ο κύριος που μας ξενάγησε και μας πληροφόρησε σχετικά με τις δραστηριότητες του καταφυγίου και τις συνήθειες των ζώων. Αξίζει να επισκεφτεί κάποιος και το Νυμφαίο και το καταφύγιο! Αξίζει ισάξια με το αντίστοιχο κέντρο για τις αρκούδες. Άλλωστε με το ίδιο εισιτήριο μπαίνεις. Υπάρχει πάρκινγκ δίπλα από τον χώρο. Η ξενάγηση ξεκινάει με ενημέρωση σε σχετικό κλειστο χώρο του κέντρου και ακολουθεί η ξενάγηση όπου βλεπεις άσπρους λύκους, λυγκες, λύκους περιοχής και τσακάλια (συνήθως είναι κρυμμένα τα τελευταία). The only negative is you might not see any of the cause usually hide!
