An absolutely amazing and the church and a huge park to around. It’s basically a complex that you need at least couple of hours to visit! Lots of rooms and passages inside, you can go to different levels and stairs. Outside you can around the walls and ruins of some structures and also in the park which is part of this complex. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t good for that, so we had to skip the park, but we took our time to enjoy the inside. The church on the territory of the was also very impressive. The whole ticket cost 10 euros. I truly advice to this place. There is a paid parking nearby. For us it was more than 3 hours, but we tried to examine everything we could. Lovely to and it’s free entry to the grounds , the up to the is steep and on an uneven cobblestone winding road , at the top you will enter the grounds through a couple of archways into an open enclosed area with spacious well maintained gardens filled with flowers and bushes. You can access the walls above the gates for excellent views and also the gardens that are lovely to around and enjoy . This is a nice to see and I feel it better to see this first then the Convent . That is wonderful to around the and the garden for free! And the view is already very beautiful. I recently had the pleasure of exploring Castelo de Tomar in Tomar and it quickly became one of my favorite historical sites in Portugal. Originally built in the 12th century by the Knights Templar, the and its adjoining Convent of Christ offer a fascinating mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture. Walking through the imposing stone walls, defensive towers, and the richly decorated Charola—an octagonal church inspired by the Temple of Jerusalem—was like stepping into a living medieval fortress. I loved the way sunlight filters through the ornate Chapter House window, casting patterns across the stone floors. The panoramic views from the ramparts over the town and the Nabão River are breathtaking, especially at sunset. The grounds are spacious, peaceful, and very well maintained, allowing me to wander at my own pace without feeling rushed. The ticket price is very affordable considering the depth of history and the number of monuments included, and the on-site explanations and museum displays provide clear context for the castle’s evolution over the centuries. One small downside is that some of the signage could be improved for non-Portuguese speakers, but friendly staff were available to help. Overall, Castelo de Tomar is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in architecture, history, or simply seeking a serene place filled with centuries of stories. Amazing with great history, well kept. Gardens are wonderful and the cat walks along the walls give you an idea about its strength and immensity, along with great views of all surroundings and the outside of the convent. Take a couple of hours to this complex. There are so many different hallways that lead to different places. The garden in the old section has some beautiful plants and trees. So many fountains! So many detailed carvings. Amazing. Very enjoyable to Tomar. Discovery of the huge historical significance of the city and the surrounding area. Nice up the steep hill to the castle. Incredible to think of walking in structure with such rich history. Whether you support the mission of the knights, the and convent are impressive to see. Tomar is a beautiful town to visit. We went for the long weekend Saturday and didn't pre book tickets as we have been planning to tomar for over a year from lisbon but always got horrible rains and weather until this particular sunny day! We took the regional train at 9.30ish a.m. from Santa Apolonia, then had a leisurely lunch and then hiked up to the castle. We didn't pre buy tickets but got them easily without wait at the spot. The is absolutely incredible and has some awesome views from different points as you go up. Must when in tomar Great place to visit. Expect to spend 2 to 3 hours at least. An amazing and grounds! Be sure to make time for this on your to Tomar! It will take a few hours to enjoy all it has to offer and to take in all of the beauty and history! The is free to enter. The Convento de Cristo - Tomar is separate and requires an entry fee. Usually 10,00€ per adult. But our family of 5 got an amazing deal, which I won’t disclose here. There are water closets at both location, and there is a café inside the convent. Outside of the is a separate café next to the parking lot. So there are food and beverage options as well as bathroom options available to you. An amazing highlight of our of the convent was the ancient bread oven and kitchen! At the castle, you may the grounds, along the wall, and enjoy a relaxing area in the canopy of shade by ancient trees. When we visited during the week, it was not too busy, and even though there were some people around, it was never overcrowded. I’m sure weekends will be more crowded than during the week. I give a true five star rating, and if we go back to Tomar, we probably will again! This is an absolute must do!!! Really beautiful but definitely would benefit from restoration / cleaning it up. There's areas where moss / dirt is accumulating on the stone. Would be cool for some rooms to be outfitted as they would in the past... Or even have the music playing throughout the building. Astonishing and historic place. Well worth half a day. I also recommend the small cafe in the Cloister of Crows - it’s hard to find the way in but a very peaceful place to take a break. Visited Boxing Day. Very cool to a storied location. Met a knight cosplayer outside the attraction who wasn’t actually part of the attraction but who offered really valuable advice about the visit. The chapter house has two entrances but the top entrance closest to the parking lot doesn’t give you access to the inside. The museum has a small fee per person and was open to general exploration.
