It is NOT. What I experienced was the exact opposite: - Homophobic verbal assault - Sexist, performatively aggressive behavior - Physical intimidation - Mockery of language and identity by the staff - A power structure that protected the aggressor - Gaslighting from who told us to leave - Hate defended as “free speech” - Discrimination for speaking English - Institutional betrayal by a supposed “safe space” I stood up for my — because no one else did. I want to share what happened at Cush Bar, a place that brands itself as progressive, inclusive, and safe — especially for members of the LGBTQ+ community (even their Google Maps highlights this.) I was there with two friends, one gay and one straight. A man and his girlfriend joined our table and what started as light conversation quickly turned disturbing. The man, unprovoked, began shouting homophobic slurs — loudly calling my “FAGGOTS,” not once, but repeatedly. I tried to de-escalate. We told him clearly and directly that his language was not acceptable and that he was no longer welcome at our table. When it became clear that no were intervening, and when this man physically leaned over the table and continued hurling slurs, then threw his wine in our direction — I reacted. I won’t pretend I handled it perfectly. I threw my drink all over him. And yes, things escalated from there. But let me be very clear: not a single member (or client) stepped in. Not one. I yelled across the bar asking if there was security. Nothing. The man walked away drenched in wine — with our wine bottle in his hand — still hurling slurs, still laughing. And he was never kicked out. When I spoke to the afterward, the bartender told me, and I quote: “It’s a country. There's speech. People can say what they want.” No. No, they can’t. Hate is NOT neutral. It is not something that can be dismissed with “freedom.” Especially not in a place that claims to be a safe space. And it didn’t end there. When I tried to explain that hate is not speech, I said those six words in English — and was immediately shut down. Out of everything I said in Bulgarian, I used just six words in English — because I have never lived in Bulgaria, my Bulgarian isn't great, and sometimes a word escapes me. I wasn’t trying to show off or reject my culture — I was making a point, in the clearest way I knew how in that moment. The bartender walked away. When he came back, I asked him if me saying six words to him in English was offensive for some reason. He said - “Speaking English in Bulgaria is disgusting.” When I asked why, he doubled down, saying everyone speaking English is ruining the world, and then proceeded to ask if I was “Bulgarian by blood” — as if my identity somehow disqualified me from having a voice, or from belonging in the conversation at all. So let’s be honest. This wasn’t just about one customer saying horrible things. That can happen anywhere. The real problem — the thing I will never forget — was the response. Or rather, the complete failure of one. When someone shouts hate in a bar like this, we expect the to step in. When no one does — what do you think happens? We take matters into our own hands. Because if I had relied on the to protect my friend? The answer would’ve been what I was told: “It’s a country. There is speech.” That is not a safe space. That is cowardice hiding behind neutrality, laced with gaslighting. This needs to be public. If you care about real inclusivity, do better. Train your staff. Stand up for your values. Don’t wait until something explodes to ask yourself why people stopped trusting you. PERIOD. Great place for late beers and good conversations, a lot of interesting characters around The bar is located in the very center of Sofia, next to one of the best cinema houses for independent and alternative films. The bar is open during day time, making it perfect for a cup of coffee while waiting for a movie to start or just enjoying a day with your friends. Cush.bar is also famous for its huge craft beer selection. Oh, how could we dare to enter and make the bartender work. He was sitting so cosy and relaxed, and we damn tourists bothered him, how shameful of us! The owner is very kind, respectful and helpful, an ideal place to take a break.Friendly people. It is one of best place in Sofia. It is a bar and a Cinema, always nice atmosphere and cool people. It is pet and the bartenders are very welcome. They do a really good cocktail 'Espresso Martini' which blow up my mind! Prices are fine and they have a really good movies with have also subtitles for foreigners (depends on the movie) and few board games available :) Lovely bar with great host, chill spot to go with friends.
