Did the circular walk - takes about an hour, 30 mins in and I was trying to imagine what it was like before the wall came down. On arrival it doesn't look much but this is an excellent if you want to understand the iron curtain. On entering you go into a small dark mirrored room and experience an evocative film about borders in Israel, Mexico, Spain etc which puts the inner German into context. You then learn about the political situation post WW2 and how the between east and west was tightened up until it became a deadly barrier with sophisticated defences to prevent people escaping from the GDP. It tells the story of the people affected by the wall, the guards, escape attempts and what happened when Germany was reunited. Lots of interesting exhibits and displays. As this was the site of an actual crossing point and some of the original buildings form part of the museum. You can go into the old mill which was the control building and enjoy views from the top. The zone is now a nature reserve and has been preserved. You can see part of the fence, security lights and watch towers from the museum. Allow a couple of hours to go round, more if you want to see all the films and listen to the audio recordings. Well worth a visit. Cost of entry: 4 Euros. When you are old enough to remember the east-west period - you can get in the the feeling it must have been with the strongly fortified - it gives me cool sense at my back.. I have been to museums in Berlin which tell the big story of the separation of the two Germanys, but this shows more of the local impact of the division and also of the significance of the station. Got a push bike from the main market place and road down to the old check point, it was very interesting to see how they live on the other side and how the check point worked still have a lot of the old fence check point facilities.
