There were even archaeologists working on finds when we were there. Lots of places to explore with a toddler. Pro Tips: - admission to wander the grounds and convenient parking within walking distance Due to an organised event in the castle, we could not enter the without tickets, so we decided to explore its exterior. Well-preserved and maintained castle, definitely worth visiting this historical landmark if you are in the Sword. Very nice open castle. Walked around for free. Enjoyed it. We missed it first day beacuse the plane was late...last day I made sure we made it back to Dublin asap...but they were closed for an event. Bad luck at this one but glad to have at least seen outside. We will have to get it in another trip. Its smaller and I tend to love those more! Cahir was a favorite for example. Swords is hosting Christmas market… stalls are open with lots of different goodies… people playing music as well… good place to take kids out for little bit of fun.. as it’s of cost Small with alot of history. It's quaint with focus on history. And if you're lucky, a celtic Heritage group (people of all ages) stops by once a month to play improvozational celtic music. We visited this when the Christmas market was on. Due to this we could not go on the but only in its yard where the market was held. Nice place and recommend it for a visit. If you are in Dublin and want to kill time while waiting for your plane, then I recommend visiting this in Swords. Only a short drive from the airport Great local attraction to see in the Dublin area, an actual 12th century Norman that has been abandoned since the 16th century and gradually restored over the past 2 decades. Wonderful example of 12th century Normal architecture with a few original rooms fully restored. A lovely integration of ruins and community park. Super-friendly staff. And it's free. The chapel alone is worth a visit, absolutely stunning! The grounds and other rooms are also well kept. Also, everybody we spoke to was very friendly and helpful. Good walkway along the castle, staff who are knowledgeable and friendly, beautiful chapel too. Benches inside the garden, makes for a good spot to gather your thoughts We went to Swords for the Christmas market and it was lovely. They have a cozy heated area to eat and Santa’s grotto is €5 per child I was pleasantly surprised — at first glance it seemed modest, but it turned out to be far richer in history and detail than I expected. The walls, chapel, towers and gatehouse are beautifully preserved. It’s well worth a visit if you enjoy architecture or history, and it feels more alive and interesting than it looks from the street. What a great find! We went out searching for medieval castles to explore. There are tons of them around and Malahide is just up the street which gets a lot more attention and tourists. The city of Swords has done a wonderful job with this property. We practically had the place to ourselves as we explored the and grounds. There was a tour group that looked to be local going on as well but the property was big enough that we never really crossed paths. We ran around for about a half and hour and we were done. It was a neat away from the tourists. I suspect that word will get out and it will get busier but for right now enjoy this gem! And oh yeah the best part is it’s FREE! Nice with admission. 30 minutes gives you plenty of time to explore the interiors and grounds. Paid parking on Main Street just out front of the or along the East side on North Street. Use Euro coins or use the parking app. Can also park at the Swords Pavilion shopping centre with the first two hours of parking free.
