At first we were not visiting as we visited loads; but finding Saschiz closed we decided to take the detour. The road from the southwest however is awful, a mess; you need to drive very slowly and carefully. The road by the north however was way better and crossed Hungarian minority villages. The is beautiful and has amazing mural paintings on the insides. As usual you can climb the bell tower. Well "manicured " and preserved. No English documents or leaflets! The is excellent. Astonishingly beautiful! Nice people! Must visit!!! Dârjiu Fortified can be visited by appointment only in the fall (check their schedule). I sent them an email a few days in advance but never got an answer which is not nice at all. Since we had a day allocated to this we decided to go there anyway. But the paved road ended abruptly some 15 km before the town of Dârjiu and turned into a dirt road of questionable condition. So we just turned back. This fortified Unitarian has been declared a UNESCO monument as it was founded in the 16th century. It's got gorgeous mural paintings on the insides of the that we didn't get to take pictures of as we were there on a Sunday during the Holy Mass and tourists are not allowed inside for that period. However, thankfully there is a very comprehensive collection of objects from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th century surrounding the which took about alf an hour to explore. What added to the experience was the amazing sight of the which are 5m tall and incredibly thick. Interesting fact: every family in the village has got at least one place where they can deposit their meat products in a designated tower. It's amazing how it is right in the middle of the living village, but this seems to be often the case around these parts. Inside the church, you can also climb to the choir's balcony, if its door is open. As customary in this branch of Christianity, the inner decorations are simple, but lovely, and everything is spotlessly clean. There are frescos on the inner walls, which seem to have been restored as well as possible and then left alone. Some of the simple, Szekler folklore style cloth decorations have inscriptions about who donated them to the church, or which year's pupils honored their this way. Make sure to also check the covered area outside, around the church, inside the walls. There are interesting artifacts from a bygone era: ox-drawn seeder (without the ox), horse-drawn fire cart (no horse) - red, with hoses -, ox cart, many wooden barn crates for grains. Not to mention the themselves, best visible from the inside, from under the roofs next to them. The outside, street (Turk/Tatar?) facing are plastered and painted white, but the inside of the walls, under the circular roof, is the original, clean, stone wall. Like a fortress or castle wall, complete with observation/shooting holes (if I remember correctly) and the remains of an even older wooden beam/plank structure to walk around the inner top part of the wall. On a Saturday afternoon, there was only one other visitor together with me, a lovely blonde who then left with her little sports car. You know who you are. When I was leaving, another car was parking, with a whole family. I had to scour Google Maps for this place, they should advertise it better, or maybe they don't need the hordes... again.
