Stunning grand hall and beautiful gardens. Staff were all so helpful and friendly, being enthusiasts with a lot of knowledge about the Howard family and house history. What a wonderful magical experience we had at Castle Howard's Alice's Christmas Wonderland. Great place inside out, it's been taken care of, staff helping you out with information, having also amazing landscape. Well worth it! Came here on a coach excursion to see the Christmas displays in the house, and had a really fabulous time! The long drive along a narrow lane through the snowy Castle Howard estate was a wonderful introduction to our visit. There was ample parking, and a very helpful lady to greet us, point us in the right direction and hand us all a map and leaflet about this year's Christmas events. There was also a land train to take us up to the and the stable courtyard, where we found a café, toilets, farm and garden centre. Had a festive lunch in the marquee café - a creamy turkey and bacon pie with mash, roast carrots and parsnips, followed by a large mince pie and a cup of tea. Quick service and attentive staff despite it being very busy, and a festive atmosphere too. There was a Christmas next to the café with lots of pricey but high quality gifts, toys and decorations. Entrance to the is up a long flight of stairs, but there's a stairlift for anyone with mobility issues. Spectacular all year round with its vast Great Hall, painted dome, and state rooms filled with furniture and art, Castle Howard had been transformed into a Christmas wonderland. This year's theme is "Wonderful Wizard of Oz", and our immersive self guided tour took us on a fantastic journey through rooms filled with animated installations, music and sound effects, and trees and decorations, meeting Dorothy and all the amazing characters she encounters in the land of Oz. There was a warm log fire in the Great Hall, and friendly, enthusiastic guides all along our route who chatted to us and shared their knowledge. The tour ended in the peaceful (and very ornate) chapel. Afterwards I enjoyed a cake and a hot chocolate with Baileys, followed by a stroll in the garden with its impressive (and frozen) Atlas Fountain. I've been to a few Christmas displays at Castle Howard over the years, and I'd say this one is the best so far! A magical experience and a great day out for children and adults alike! Great day out. The even though it's winter were giving fantastic views of the house. The Alice in Wonderland Christmas themed decorations were very impressive. Accessible by bus (81) from York for £6 round trip per person. £11 to walk the - the was closed when we visited but it was still nice and atmospheric. The park here for children is great... Coming during school hours gave a couple of adults a good chance to try the rope bridge and zipline without seeming uncool. (They're awesome) Great castle and surrounding gardens! BUT: DON‘T GO THERE AROUND CHRISTMAS! This historic place was turned into a Disneyland-like Xmas show, we really disliked. Happy to pay the steep £39/person entrance, but not for this! Land train which you can get on which drops you off at either the or the lake, saves walking back uphill. When we visited there was a brass band playing which was very entertaining, combining modern songs with humour, really enjoyed it. Several places to eat, I had a Yorkshire rhubarb cake and it was delicious. Nice day out, stately home with clearly a very extensive programme of renovation and upkeep. Stunning grand hall and gardens. Walled garden has so much going on. On price I feel its a little overpriced (more expensive than Chatsworth and much less to see) but a nice day out nonetheless. Wouldn't pay £32 to revisited though. An absolutely place. I highly recommend buying a ticket to the palace and gardens. The interiors and paintings are beautiful. Most rooms have guides who will tell you the history of what you're seeing and the entire place. Lady Howard still lives in one of the wings of the palace. Unfortunately, the castle library is in her private rooms. 😢. The place is enormous! We were only there for three hours, but we could have explored it all day. It was a little bit expensive as the and walled were shut, leaving walks to the lake and back of the house. It is kept immaculately and there are a lot of sculptures and other features to admire. A stately home, largely renovated since a catastrophic fire back in 1940. The interior is spectacular and the fire damaged rooms have been lovingly restored. It's also a pleasure wandering around the grounds, with its lakes, woods and walled gardens. There are a number of good cafés and shops, the farm being excellent. The staff were all so helpful and friendly, being enthusiasts with a lot of knowledge about the Howard family and history. Well worth a but allow a day. Came here to take part in 10k run, so had a opportunity to run all the way round the gardens, and then have a further potter around in the walled garden afterwards, and nip to the cafe, and a peek into the big itself. The are magnificent, very natural, Capability Brown style. You could certainly imagine two Austen characters galloping across the grounds, laughing as they did so in the warming sun. At least that’s how it felt in October. Highly recommend it. The building itself is with walks in the castle to take in the full splendour of the building. A must for all ages. If you enjoy a walk round some fabulous gardens, lakes, temples then this is for you. I didn't go in the as I had a dog with me but the tea rooms, gift and farm all had something to give you joy. The is magnificent, and I highly recommend grabbing an audioguide which is super simply to follow. Volunteers are also quite friendly, providing more details about the house. The and the forest are also enchanting. If you York, definitely recommend the trip to Howard. An impressive and recent refurbishment has given new luster to the approximately two thirds of the hall that wasn't wiped away by the 1940 fire. The other third will need untold funds to complete. Michael at reception was so friendly and gave us info and how to get around. He was humorous too. So it was a great experience from that right through to the end of the day. Definitely worth a visit. The are quite large. We visited in Oct so was quite quiet, can imagine in Summer it's very busy. We came for the Alice in Wonderland Christmas display and for a meal. There was plenty of parking. It was a nice walk to the which for us was great. If you don't fancy the walk (maybe 500m) there is a small bus that will take you there. All the staff and volunteers were very friendly and keen to make sure you knew where to go. The rooms were decorated as the story of Alice in Wonderland. These were brilliant and so entertaining. The meal we had very tasty. There were two areas that could have been improved - the room was very bland and could have decorated far better. The service was very slow and I suspect this was due to inexperienced staff. The young staff were though and just needed more help and a supervisor. We can't wait to see what the will put on next year as we will definitely be coming back. Went for the Alice in wonderland themed Christmas event, which was brilliant. The kids also loved the play area and the woodland walk. Have been for the balloon festival before as well which was a great summer day out and will definitely go back again. Such a historic building with volunteer staff to tell you about the family, the paintings, and just a wonderful experience all round. The are huge but very well tended. If I get to Yorkshire again it will definitely get another visit. We had lunch there too. Very good food with help yourself to salad stuff. We had the cheese filled jacket potatoes with salad and homemade coleslaw. Too full for sweet but they looked amazing.
