The setting is spectacular especially during sunset, with amazing views of the setting sun over the Monti Pisani. Once drawbacks: no English explanations or audio guide or tour. Also, the on-the-hour guided tours seem to happen a bit sporadically, only if the guard "feels like". So, make sure you ask for it,.otherwise it may not happen. The tour once it happened was actually wonderful and the guide/guard very nice and very well informed. Also, the little town of Cerreto is worth a stroll around. A hidden gem that not everybody knows about. The entrance is free and the insides are definitely worth the visit. But the real charm is watching the sunset from atop the stairs when the villa is already closed. Absolutely astonishing... And you're gonna be the only people there. It's a very beautiful place. Unhelpful staff willing only not to be bothered by the scarce visitors. What a sad dilapidated sight. A wonderful, small museum outside of Florence, part of the Uffizi constellation. Once a Medici hunting lodge that was owned most recently by the Geddes family, it holds Medici artifacts and paintings beyond the familiar faces at the Uffizi. There is a ghost story attached to one of the rooms, as this is where Isabella de Medici, who moved to the hunting lodge after her father's death, was strangled by her husband. Isabella was the older sister of Lucrezia, the subject of Browning's "My Last Duchess" and Maggie O'Farrell's "The Marriage Portrait;" the two died just days apart. We had first heard Isabella's story and the subsequent appearances of her ghost from a family member who had visited one of the Geddes brothers just after the war. We asked the tour guides about the murder and possible ghost in our broken Italian. "No, no, no. No ghosts!" they assured us. But when we entered the bedroom where the alleged murder had happened (and the ghost had been seen all those years ago), a rush of wind rattled the wooden shutters furiously, slamming them shut. Everyone laughed, including the guides! You can explain it away (the lodge sits high above the town) but it was fabulously atmospheric. I highly recommend a visit if you are driving around Tuscany, even if you don't see, or experience, a "ghost." The Leonardo da Vinci Museum and the artist's birthplace are a short 15-minute drive away from the villa. Smaller than it looks and with nothing really interesting to see tbh, but it’s free and a nice trip if you have lots of time over An amazing building with some fantastic artefacts.
