I first came to this place by chance, many years ago, without realizing where I really was. Kobarid meant nothing to me. It was only after speaking with the inn's owner in Italian that the name Caporetto popped up. Then, after seeing my instant reaction to that name, he started bringing me old boots, artillery shells and stuff like that, all found in his own backyard! From then on the spell of Caporetto has descended on me and I kept coming to visit this area again and again. The Ossuary of Italian WWI soldiers is a sobering spot in Kobarid. The memorial's really striking - 3 big stone circles and the names of thousands of Italian soldiers who died in the area are etched into the walls. It's one of those places that makes you stop and think; the history's palpable. Feels like a place of respect, so you wanna be mindful of that when you're there. We spent about 20 mins having a look around, reading some of the names and taking it all in. It's tucked away a bit in Kobarid, but worth seeking out if you're into history or just wanna pay respects. The walk up to or down from the ossuary is nice too, add to the contemplative vibe. The major italian sacrarium outside the italian territory. A great memorial of WWI for its own fallen. Located in a marvellous place it’s a reminder for the new generations in europe! Must see!!! I found the bones of a relative here. Very beautiful to look at from a distance. Interesting architecture. It's a place of rememberance, so it doesn't have to be entertaining,but it is very simple. I add the fifth star, because the view is worth the walk up the hill. The church on the top was open to be viewed, but not walked into. Beautiful surroundings with a nice view of the Soča River. There’s a large and accessible parking area, but the road leading to it is very narrow. I’m not sure how two bigger cars would pass each other.
