Castelo de Évora Monte Type: / tower Time spent: 30-40 min Path for disabled: not available Parking: available, small Bike parking: not available Price: 1.5 EUR - the main tower (!) Main tower is closed on Mondays Public transport: from Estremoz (3.25 EUR) / Évora, bus, 3 times per day Built in 12th century, it was reconstructed several times. The main updates were done in the 14th century, when the medieval city was surrounded by walls, and in the 16th city, when the was reconstructed after the earthquake (1531). The unusual construction of the main tower can be related to the updated military necessaries of those times (16-17 centuries). In the 19th century the city lost it's importance and it's municipal status was ended. Cool castle, very different from the typical in Portugal. Stunning panoramic views and beautiful village. We didn't attend to visit inside so I don't know about tickets, but the view from the hill on which the located is amazing. Different from other castles we visited in Portugal. Just went in and walked around. Mostly empty but very interesting for the fact it hasn't been modified much. Gave a good feeling of the starkness that living in such a building would have involved. I visited today, very soon before the afternoon closing period. It was a stormy day! Well... Wow! I don't know the name of the very kind lady there, who welcomed me and toured me around the ground floor, but she was an amazing ambassador... not only for the castle, but for Portugal itself. I can't imagine a better person to convey the history and spirit of the site and the country itself. I've been visiting for some time but speaking with her today was one of my favorite experiences, and of course the itself is amazing. This is different from other surrounding forts and castles I've seen. It's a different style, rounded and so perfectly framed at the top of a hill. There was nobody there on my visit. Truly an amazing part of the Portuguese landscape and rich history. It was such a pleasure to walk around and explore the and surrounding area. I'm driving all over this country, and this experience stood out to me for the history, the architecture, and the natural surroundings. Thank you!!!! Interesting architecture. Inside it is a kind of museum, with few real items but with clarifying info graphics. IMHO the best thing is the 360 degrees view that you can have from the roof. Be prepared to climb many steps in a narrow stairway. Entrance is free but check the open hours before. They close early. Take advantage to visit the village of Evoramonte and watch the sunset. A plus? Visit the crafts and regional product store Celeiro Comum. Amazing location. The has a lot of reading material at the floor level and a nice view up top. You can explore the walls both on top and inside. It's a very calm and peaceful place although very windy. In general, almost nothing special inside except the gorgeous view from the top. Anyway, the price is not big and it worth it going, at least to support all work they do to keep it well. Also, jfyi, not dog friendly. But, in general the is absolutely beautiful from the outside. It looks so unusual compared to other castles in Portugal. Also this village inside the walls - so beautiful and so big pleasure to walk around. Absolutely worth visiting!
