Burgruine Kallmünz is a medieval hilltop ruin perched on the Schlossberg spur (at about 433 m above sea level), overlooking the Naab and Vils rivers. The site has been fortified since prehistoric times, with Bronze Age and Celtic ramparts surrounding the plateau, and its medieval core dates back to around the 9th century. Known historically as a seat of the Counts of Kallmünz, the fortress was first officially mentioned in 983 and later held by the Wittelsbach dynasty. Over the centuries, the saw various reconstructions—significant renovations under Ruprecht I in 1361—and endured destruction during the Landshut War of Succession (1504) and again during the Thirty Years’ War, when Swedish troops burned it in 1641. After being decommissioned, it eventually came under municipal ownership in 1793. It’s open year-round and climbable; a short but steep hike from leads through wooded paths. From the top, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views across the Naab/Vils river valleys and the quaint below. To visit.. don't hesitate to up to the old fortress. And also to take off of the paragliding. Their ballet above the clift is amazing, colorful and windy. Beautiful view on the Naab.. paddlers and kayak. If you want to head up the castle, you can either follow the signs in the which will point you towards the stairs leading up. This path, however, is quite steep and not suited for those who are not good in walking. There is another path, however, which is way easier to walk. Once you see the wooden sign pointing towards the castle, just on until you leave the town. Head on for a bit more (you might spot a lot of gliders there) until you see a path leading towards the left. Follow this one and you will reach the castle. In front of the ruins you’ll find an art-piece and a fantastic view over the itself. The is surrounded by a wall and you can enter them through the preserved gate. The was destroyed and abandoned in 1641. In the middle you find the tower, which you can actually climb. The staircase inside seems rather new and it’s in perfect shape. The view from the top is truly impressive. We walked down choosing the staircase path and that one truly was interesting. If you like a bit of a walk, combined with stunning views and interesting ruins, then this is the spot for you! This is one of the most beautiful towns I've seen in Germany. Dear Lord this place is GORGEOUS! The river, the castle, the town, the ice cream shop, the coffee car, and let's not forget about the church, just amazing. Totally recommend for anyone to come in and spend a beautiful afternoon with the family. Fantastic and experience. There is a steep climb from within the town, right behind the church. Alternatively, along the river heading north east about 700m. There is then an easy path that goes back along the ridge line to the castle. Stunning views once you are up there. Absolutely beautiful! I recommend going on a Sunday less traffic and you can park at the Netto right before the bridge. The is super cute and traditional. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes to hike up to the castle. Oh have a mask ready to enter the tower. There is small cafe right off the river 😍 Its a nice old with availablity to enter the top and have a look at the city from top of castle. Recommend.
