This place dates back to the 15th century, and I am reminded of this every single time I step out of the door as there are little stainless steel disks on the ground reminding me that I am living and walking down historical streets. If you make the long trudge up the hill to what they claim is the castle, (you can also drive to it) you are actually presented with just a small section of wall and a couple of towers. Granted, it is the best view of Castelo Branco, and from it you can see all the way to the snow-capped mountains of Serra da Estrela national park which is the highest point of mainland Portugal. They also offer Selfie Posts to position your phone on to capture that perfect Instagram pic. And because the air here is so clean, you really can see a long, long way into the distance. You can also see Spain on a distant horizon if you face the correct way. But the fact is, little of the remains. If you think that you are going to see ruins like in Rome or something, then think again. However, if you keep your eyes open, as you walk around the old part of the town you will see many places where the old still remains in between the newer buildings.
