And the park near by should look really nice once finished. The Glitiškės was first mentioned in 1483. Until the end of the Second World War, it belonged to the Jelenskis, a family of Lithuanian nobles, descended from the Karaim-Tatar khans, who moved to the territory of the LDK during the reign of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas the Great. The last owner, Kazimierz Jelenskis, died in the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz in 1943. The surviving main palace of the was built in 1860 and has classical and vernacular architectural forms. The palace stands on the eastern side of Lake Širvys. The has been renovated and reconstructed in the last few years. A little park in front of the main palace has alsoreceived attention and is a nice entry to the former glorious estate. After the war, a school was located in the palace, currently it belongs to the Vilnius district municipality and there is a library in it. Other buildings, except for the office and the distillery, have been privatised, some of them stand today but are in very dilapidated shape. The is a cultural heritage object protected by the State. I'm very happy that it got attention and was renovated. I hope that it will be properly used by the local community and that it will receive the appropriate attention from locals and outsiders alike. A true natural wonder and a true beauty grows in the courtyard of the - an oak tree. Supposedly, this is the tallest oak tree (over 24 meters) in the country. It’s also said that it’s the third “fattest” (over 740cm in circumference at 1,3 m height) in Lithuania, too. It’s size is really impressive. Three of us tried to hug it and barely managed to do that. The tree is a protected natural wonder of the country, so be nice to it. Legend has it that the oak tree is important to Lithuania not only due to its gorgeous size, but because just before the 1831 upheaval against the Tsarist Russia, local youth was gathering here and planning their steps in the upcoming upheaval. Įspūdingo dydžio ir galingumo Glitiškių ąžuolas, o už jo ir vaizdingas Širvio ežeras... Sad that such place is not in a very good condition. Nuostabus interjeras, daug veiklos daroma.
