Secans del Segrià i Utxesa

Lleida, Spain Nature preserve

Top-rated.online cuts through the clutter, highlighting only the reviews that are most helpful, earn the most likes, or come from the most active contributors. Nice spot to go for a drive and to birdwatch but there are nicer places in neighbouring Huesca. Relaxing and happiness The flowering of the peach trees and other fruit trees in this area is a wonder of humanity, comparable to the flowering in Japan. I hope many of you are encouraged to visit. The flowering of the peach trees and other fruit trees in this area is a wonder of humanity, comparable to the flowering in Japan. I hope many of you are encouraged to visit. Outstanding. Fantastico lucar Relax I was first shown Utxesa in the early 1990s, when it brought a new perspective to me about the birding possibilities to the south of Lleida. Over a series of visits over the years at different seasons the list of interesting birds that revealed themselves to me became quite a long one, and featured birds such as Ferruginous Duck, Greater Scaup, Ruddy Duck, Little Bittrn, Savi's Warbler, Squacco Heron, and more. Then the Bearded Reedlings arrived and are still there, as too are the Moustached Warblers, at one of the very few breeding sites for this species in the whole of Spain. There used to be a winter murmuration of tens or hundrerds of thousands of Common Starlings, and a winter roost of maybe 7 or 8 Hen Harriers. That's gone. Worse though is what has happened to the water: after closing down the power station at Seròs they allowed farmers to plant fruit trees right up to the edges of the reservoir. That meant pumping houses to pump the water from the to the fields. Result? Contamination of the water by oil leakages from the pump houses (this I have seen with my own eyes), the solid residues left after harvesting the fruit, plus the pesticides that are either blown or washed into the reservoir. We always talk about how birds are bioindicators, so let's talk about it then. Now the only thing that floats on the main bodies of water are introduced Mute Swans, whereas all the surface and diving duck have all but disappeared. I've seen migrating terns coming down to fly around and check out the and to fly away again, leaving it for worthless and biologically dead. Oh yes, the fruit tree blossom is very nice and pink if that's all you came to see. Also, there are signs for cycling and walking routes around different parts of the reservoir, and, after all, if nobody like me told you what it used to be like then nothing would be the matter, would it? Great views and picnic space. Access can be difficult to find without maps.
