Roman Aqueduct of Barbegal

So we're driving through from one amazing town in the southern part of France to another and, voila, just sitting the on either side of this tiny narrow road, the vestiges of another Roman aqueduct. No signage on the side we came from so just pulled over and took a stroll alongside to one end that opened up to some incredible views of the countryside. While this doesn't compare to the amazing Pont de Gare it was still worth the stop. Surprisingly well preserved section of the Roman aquaduct network running from the Alpilles to Arles. Easy access from the road where you can park. WARNING: locals advise high risk of theft of valuables from cars here so don't leave valuables unattended. That said, it is well worth walking along the main section to look through the gap in the rocks and over the site of the meunisie (Roman water mill) towards the Chateau de Barbegel in the valley below. A model of the how the mill was in Roman times is in Arles archeological museum. Great place to around the ruins and see how they built aqueducts. Really well preserved had a great spot for a picnic lunch!! Nice stop while we were doing our bike tour. Very cool to around and actually touch an old Roman acquaduct. Good example of an old Roman which you can under, around and along. I have to admit, we just sort of stumbled across this one. There is a small brown street sign pointing to a roman aqueduct, and we turned around to see what it was. It is an amazing segment of a 2,000 year old Roman structure, that literally runs across fields and through people's back yards. There is a small unpaved off street parking area. It is free and open to the public. This is the opposite of Pont du Guard, very intimate , non touristy, visible scars of time gone by… as in our own lives. Beautiful spot for reflection! Fascinating Roman remains. The runs to a gap in the ridge and beyond that are the remains of a massive watermill from the second century. At one time it had two rows of eight overshot waterwheels. The pits for the wheels are still visible but it's a steep slope of exposed limestone so perhaps safer just to view from the top. The site is unmanned and there are no signs apart from the itself so do your research in advance. There is a small car park just down the road, when we were there we were the only car so not usually busy. Very interesting insight into Roman water systems and milling. Lovely place to visit. Nice view's around. Short distance and plenty of parking along main road. Super cool spot, with free parking right off the road. A one minute to the start of the Roman aqueducts ruins. You can then south along the for about 10 minutes, next to a beautiful olive orchard, until you reach the end where there is a beautiful view of the French countryside. Very peaceful place. Smaller stature but very accessible and uncrowded Roman ruins, with an organic olive grove all around. We had the whole area pretty much to ourselves to explore! We walked there from Fontvieille, which was a nice hike through the forest. Well worth the effort.
