This is a nice off exit 17 on the M8 motorway. It provides a pretty even terrain looped and would suit children or anyone else not particularly fond of steep terrain. The wood is clearly an industrial and commercial forestry as is evident by the numerous piles of wood stacked along the route, and also by the particular evergreen tree varieties planted throughout, including many Norwegian species. Vast swathes look desolate but there are a few gems along the including a little indigenous plantation with little fairy doors scattered throughout. The Owenacurra River starts in this after which it makes its way towards Midleton. Moanbaun Wood is a amenity located near the village of Watergrasshill, about 20 minutes north of Cork City. It is a Coillte managed woodland and it is open to the public. It continues to be a favourite of mine and is one of many woodlands in Cork to go for a walk. Moanbaun is the perfect little woodland to bring children or pets as the trains are short and can but made longer if you think the kids are up to it. Its especially a good place to go running in the Summer evenings! The Main Walking Loops: There are two approximately 3.5km long loops to choose from in Moanbaun Woods. You can easily cover either loop in under 40 minutes. The loops are made up of access roads and the gradient for the most part is very level. There is one steep section on the left loop where the access road dips down crossing a little stream. You can also take a out an back on some of the access roads to add to your but I haven't really explored these. There are also a number of benches dotted along the if you need to take a rest. The Forest: The majority of the is made up of evergreen trees which are being grown for comercial timber however, there is a little beech tree section in the middle of the left loop. There is a little fairy house trail in this section which can be exciting for young children. The beech wood area is also for mushroom hunting in the Autumn but the coniferous areas are good too! Harvesting: Be aware that this is an actively managed and from time to time harvesting activities can be taking place. I noticed some thinning activity in January of 2024 and there was som clear felling activity in January of 2023. Depending on the time of year the access roads can get quite muddy at times due to these activities. Local Scenery: The is quite nice to trail trough and it has its own natural beauty blending in with the local countryside and its rolling fields. At the "back" of the the access road overlooks local farmland and its very beautiful at the moment as some sections of have been clearns and some sections are young so the canopy has not blocked the view! In the spring time you might get lucky to see some frog spawn so itsl could be a little adventure for children! Wheelchair Users: I think the is fairly wheelchair friendly but again only if you use some sort of sport wheelchair with gearing or an electric wheelchair. Due to my lack of wheelchair experience I cannot say for certain is it possible to use an standard wheel chair. Dog Walkers: The loops are dog friendly but please be respectful and remove dog waste as people on this trail in particular just use it as a giant dog poo bin! I've even noticed dog bags just thrown it into the woodland off of the path only for the bags to get caught up in the brances and now remain visible for other people using this amenity... Carpark: The car park was non-existent when I first started coming here but a larger carpark was constructed towards the end of 2021 or possibly the start of 2022 along the L1540 Leamlara to Watergrasshil road. Its a addition to have all the extra space as the carpark can be busy at times. Coillte managed small forest. Grand for a quick stroll but it is far from picturesque. A few sections have been felled, no 'off road' tracks through the to on from what I could see. Much nicer experiences elsewhere spot for a walk. Even in the rain it really is a fabulous place to get some exercise. A magnificent with a convenient wide road and numerous trails leading deep into the forest. Unfortunately, huge tracts have been clear-cut and look like they've been through the apocalypse, which is very disappointing. Lovely place for walking dogs. Nice paths, not too much incline, suitable for all ages and most abilities. Only parking spaces for a half dozen cars though, no toilets and only one picnic bench. 3.6km trail Can be improved Smal loop many information from flora fauna Beautiful area- woods, trees, views, and lots of blackberries Beautiful and walking Lovely ... Loop is around 4 kilometres distance. Parking has a low barrier if you have a van but there is one grassy spot to leave a van and do the walk. Signs on the are too I like this place for running. The loop is a little over 5k with a few ups and downs. It can be quite mucky in places - don't go walking in your nice white shoes! Also with logging the landscape can be broken and not that pretty. But I still like it. :) Nice and overall it's ok for ppl living nearby, or visiting this part of the world. No much wildlife and each year there is fewer trees around, but I think that's maintenance. There is little fairy area and I think scouts used to use it or still using it, so there are things to see and do if you have kids. I'd started visiting this around 5 years ago, this have been always lovely, but sometimes it can get busy in weekends and certain times. Pity there is being rubbish thrown into the by people or kids, don't understand why they have to litter and it's bit disappointing. I know this is forestry, but there should be rubbish bins at least on exits where ppl can throw their rubbish out and also it should be regularly emptied. Working people paying enough taxes for this things to be covered in. If you like woods, you'll love this place. Multiple forestry roads (unpaved) to for as long or as short as you wish. There are signs to point out flora and fauna highlights. It is a managed so you may encounter machinery in places. My favourite walk, wish people would be more mindful with their fogs as most running around free.
