It's usually quite wet as streams of water flow down the gulley especially after heavy overnight rain. Lots of scrambling and picking your way up this tricky and difficult to ascend gulley, which brings you to the base of Carrauntoohill- you’ll still need to ascend further to the top from this point. Definitely safer to have good hiking boots/shoes with decent grip, trainers are not a good idea. Expect to meet people ascending and descending the same route (tricky route to descend in particular, just take your time and mind the loose rocks). Depending on your fitness and weather conditions allow 40 mins to maybe an hour to complete this section. To reach the Devil's you will need to trek for perhaps an hour through the spectacular Hag's Glen- usually people start from Cronin’s Yard, a pay car park (it’s only €2). At Cronin’s there’s a small café, toilets and shower facilities- there’s also a camping site. Although Devil's turned into a living waterfall due to the rain, the hike up to the bottom was worth the hike. Gorgeous views and an adventure on it's own. We took the devil's down after climbing up to the summit. This is not for the faint hearted. The descent is steep and slippery. As we were coming down there were people coming up, so anything loose is potentially going to hurt someone. Having said that well worth the effort. Would 100% recommend Challenging climb but worth it in the end. The views are amazing as you climb up the ladder. I have zero fitness & I made it to the top, all be it with plenty of stops to rest. You just need to take your time & watch your footing as it quite dangerous. The Devils is a great spot and well worth the hike. Beautiful views of the lakes below and at the top you can meet people. You need to be extremely careful if you choose to go down the Devils as there is a steam and with a lit of loose rocks and bolders. Climbed this twice very enjoyable.. we were lucky the two times I've climbed it had amazing picturesque views.. great achievement.. would recommend BUT please go with a guide or someone who know it very very well.. it is dangerous but very doable a great day out.. The devil's is quite a spot, with some parts loose under foot and it takes a bit of care and organisation to make it up as some spots are difficult to pass and require an alternative route to advance up or down (switching from left side to right side, etc). The correct parking lot is on the other side of the mountain It was a wonderful experience, difficult in some moments. It took 8 hours with sunny and rainy, windy weather. You should be strong and resistant. There was cloudy around when we climbed on the top of the Mountain Carrauntoohil. Strong emotions, happiness and excitement after this trip.
