You may find some springs after the stairs ended. Don't start the tour without a shoe with a good grip. I loved to refresh myself with the cool seawater at the port, it was a safe haven for my tired feets. Stunning scenery in this mountainous, semi wilderness. Very few facilities but that's what makes it great! Basic coffee shops with clean toilets at beginning and end. Trails are tough and uncompromising in the main and you need a decent level of fitness and mobility. Great inland destination Roads are a bit dangerous but thats the mountainous nature of crete I recommend visiting to have a glimpse of the Mediterranean inland nature Its really wonderful how people used to live in areas where its very difficult to reach in the old times Fantastic trek through the Samaria Gorge. Difficult trek not for everyone. I'm of medium fitness. A lot of very rocky terrain. I did it in a pair of runners but would advise proper trekking shoes. But if you think you're up to it it's well worth the effort. The scenery/landscape breathtaking. Spectacular views from the top and the whole Trek down. We booked a day trip through Elafonissos travel, they arranged pickup from hotel, bus drive to the entrance of the gorge, ferry from Agia Roumeli to Sougia where the bus waited to drive us back to the hotel. We would definitely recommend this day trip. But prepare for a long day. The pickup (around Chania) was about 5:40am and the drop off around 8pm. During the summer period you need to be prepared for the heat, it was around 20 degrees Celsius at the top in the morning. When we arrived to Agia Roumeli it was 35 degrees. But you can walk in your own pace and there are plenty of resting stops, roughly one stop every other kilometer and restrooms every third kilometer. Along the way there are frequent places where you can fill your bottle with spring water. The old town of samaria is located roughly halfway down the trek which was a good place to stop for lunch. There where wild goats that gladly wanted to join for lunch. Almost by every rest stop there were also park rangers that could be of assistance if required. One note would be regarding the rest rooms. Perhaps it was only our experience, but it seemed people didn't know how to use these kind of restrooms as someone had left their fecies without flushing in one. Overall this was a really great experience with absolutely beautiful views along the way. On top of that you arrive to a small cozy village with a stony beach and the was really perfect to cool down from a hot day of walking. Loved the hike until 9km then started hating it. When I came to the end I was proud and happy I did it. It’s definitely worth it. Small thing I didn’t know, when you come to the end you still have to walk 2km to the beach/ferry. The ferry only leaves at 17:00 so you have time to relax at the beach. Most beautiful place in the world but very hot make sure to bring and sun cream fill up points are dotted around overall lovely I did a 4 hour hike enjoyed it Gorgeous scenery in a semi difficult hike. Heat can be challenging between 12-2pm in the summer months. There’s a few natural refill stations along the way with many many spots to take fantastic pictures. I will definitely come back here again and hike it the other way around Website change monitoring Monitor any webpage for changes – get instant email alerts when prices drop, new jobs are posted, products come back in stock, or competitors update their sites.
