Hard 6 hour goes from 4000ft above sea level down to coast, path very uneven and slow going but amazing scenery and feels like you've complete a challenge at the end. Need to get the down the coast for the return trip. The four stars are for the overall duration which is at least 14 hours from your hotel and back. It is up to you to decide if that your time. Overall it is a great hike, no doubt. Everything is well organised on the way, super safe with great, spectacular and unique views. There is plenty of fresh free sources, trust me you will need that. But then you get trapped by the and bus schedule and, worst of all, they are usually late at departure. Things to know: 16 kilomtres is a lot even on flat land so be ready for a big effort. Is getting extremely hot on the way, just be ready. Some say no need of hiking shoes, but not having them makes the descent pretty hard and unpleasant in some places. But yes,it is still possible and safe without hiking shoes. Last mile is a real pain due to the extreme heat. Luckily there is a small bus caring people for 2 euros, but you would pay even 20 to get to the port. Ok so. I have to admit that after traversing this landscape… I have come to realise i had no idea what a was. To my defence, the only other I have ever been privy to was Mushroom in Maria Kart. Fair to say, they were not similar in the slightest. Keep that in mind if you decide to come here. It’s is so very gorgeous and the beach at the end is one of the best beaches eva!!! #SamariaGorge One of the most hikes I’ve ever done. The trek to Agia Roumeli was magical. Do not skip this during your time in Crete. The first portion of the trail is very steep with incredible mountain views. The ground is quite rocky so you must watch your step so you don’t roll an ankle. Get there early to beat the crowds at the beginning. I highly recommend taking a bus with a tour company to the start since they will handle your transportation to and from the start and end of the hike, and the mountain roads are difficult to navigate. You have to buy a €10 ticket per person at the beginning. Along the trail there are restrooms (they’re a bit primitive) and areas to stop and eat the snacks you packed. You may see goats and donkeys along the way! The in the is for drinking, so don’t contaminate it. At the end of the there are restaurants and a beach to swim at. Then you take a hour to Sougia and bus back. Samaria Gorge....amazing, long, hot, beautiful, hard on feet, wear proper footwear, sunscreen, have bottles with you and snacks, electrolyte drinks...not for fainthearted or those with medical problems or mobility problems!!!!! So it, don't miss the ferry!!!! It is hard the first part!!!! Incredible views, breathtaking natural reserve, and a hike! You definitely need good shoes, as you descend on the rocky hillside on pretty rocky stairs, and once in the itself, you through the riverbed on even more rocks. The views and the experience more than make up for it, though. Also, prepare food, because once in, there is nowhere to buy anything from. Water, you can refill on multiple spots. We did the in early September on a Sunday, and it was amazing because it wasn’t crowded. The itself is stunning, with incredible scenery and breathtaking views—definitely doing. In terms of difficulty, I’d rate it as upper-medium, though it really depends on your fitness level. Plan for a total hiking time of 4.5 to 6.5 hours. There are plenty of spots along the way where you can rest, with toilets and access to drinking water. You’ll usually also find staff at these locations. The route is very straightforward and well-marked, so it’s almost impossible to get lost. The ends about 2 km from Agia Roumeli, where you’ll need to take a boat either to Sougia or Loutro. Important note: if you can’t find boat tickets online, it’s likely because only about 25% of them are sold digitally. You’ll have no problem buying tickets once you’re there. If possible, bring some snacks or food with you to keep your energy up. Finally at the fourth time in Crete we did Samaria hike. It was very nice, you will see lots of different sceneries from high mountain to Forrest walks to through the deepest narrowest gorge. I enjoyed it most of the times but it is longer than expected, and especially the rocky downhill part at the beginning is rather tiring. Good and plenty of are a must. There are lots of resting places with fresh springs (yes drinking at excellent quality). But it is a hike. Make sure you enjoy it, it’s definitely it! One of the best trails on the island. Whole day trip. It took us about 5,5 hours to through the whole gorge. Few toilets and places to refill on the way. Bus tickets available to buy at the bar just by the entrance. The view is definitely the 5-6 hour hike. Would recommend going earlier and buy tickets earlier as lines can get pretty long. Also the bus after the might be full, so buying tickets in advance can save you loads of stress. I went here on an organized tour from Chania, although you can go with public transport and it would be 10€ cheaper... And I am not satisfied with the guides. But, nature is very beautiful. There's a 5€ entry ticket, suggested to buy in advance to skip queues. There are fountains throughout the so you won't be thirsty. Bring some food with you. At the end there are pricey restaurants. Good views overall, nice experience Parking was super easy – you can drive right up to the gate (departure fee €5 per family). Entry tickets to the are €6 each. The itself was absolutely it! Most of the trail goes downhill, so your calves will feel it, but it’s manageable. Even our 11-year-old did the whole with just a few minor complaints. It took us about 5 hours. Along the way there are lots of spots to refill your bottle and a few toilets (a bit limited, but available). When you reach the village at the bottom, it’s easy to buy boat tickets and grab some food. We had already purchased the bus tickets back up to the parking area where we left our car. Il faut prévoir 5-6 h de marche si on veut la faire tranquillement. Prévoir de bonnes chaussures de randonnée ou a minima de bonnes baskets car on marche beaucoup sur des pierres, parfois glissantes. Le chemin est bien sécurisé et on trouve des points d'eau potable régulièrement. Il y a également des WC tout le du parcours. Il faut avoir un peu de condition physique pour descendre car la chaleur de la fin du parcours vient vite épuiser certains organismes. Prévoir également du liquide pour le bus (pas obligatoire) des 2 derniers kilomètres ainsi que pour le bateau et le bus retour au parking des Gorges. Prévoyez de partir tôt avec de quoi manger car c'est une grosse journée. A really impressive place… big mountains…great nature… but please it only with really good shoes! The views are great, the nature is pristine and you can even see a Kri-Kri if you are lucky! The park is very well maintained and very clean, there are also park keepers and plenty of fire equipment. However, there is hardly any cell coverage, the can get very warm in the afternoon and there's plenty of wasps. I would therefore reccommend going early in the morning and make sure to bring any medication you might need as the is quite and getting help would be difficult. Also bring good as sometimes you have to through a riverbed full of boulders. Also, there's an entrance fee €5 which you can pay by card. An unforgettable and truly unique experience! Man this was a hell of a hike... But so it. I literally could not for a few days after completing this absolute must-see for people that enjoy hiking. Make sure to bring enough and sunscreen! At the end of the walk, there's a little café and sitting area with a great view to rest for a bit. The orange juice is so good! The most we’ve ever had! You should be in an ok shape to do this hike, we saw people that were struggling to complete it. The park is well planned, had rangers at every pit stop (had one every hour) and fire hose in case of a fire. There are along the trail for drinking. It took us 7 hours to complete. Important things they don’t tell you: 1. The road there is as as the hike! I recommend arriving around 6 am so you can make stops on the observatories. 2. It’s freezing at the top. When we hiked it was actually warm with a nice breeze. 3. I cannot stress this enough: wear hiking shoes! I wore palladium as I thought it will do. It didn’t. My feet killed me. 4. We arrived on time for the 17:30 but it was sold out! Maybe that day was busier than usual, but we had to wait till the 19:10 which was tiring. Unfortunately the main track at Samaria was closed. But hiked another. 3h one way up to a very high peak, same way back. N.B You need to be in good shape. Need hiking shoes, good equipment, and food. Parking was free now. No toilet open, but normally during season there is. Unglaublich schön What a hike!? The sights were absolutely stunning 🤩; mountains and Gorges buttt it was a very very (18KM+), very very dusty and very very tiring hike… not to mention a bit dangerous too! At the start of the there are helmets that you can use for free, as well as signs everywhere along the way that you need to be careful for rocks falling down. What did we like about the hike, I must definitely say the sights of the Gorge, with lots of nature but what we didn’t like was that we didn’t really see much of those sights since we had to look down with basically each step you take, this is because of the very very rocky road that made it super tricky. There are a few resting spots but nothing that you can buy there, so make sure you bring plenty of and food! Nice thing is, the mountain that is drinkable and very cooling; but note that you cannot swim in it! We were the first to be picked up by the touring company, (06:15u) and the last to be dropped off (21:00u).. so it was a very day.. and then Recovery started! Our calve muscles were super sore for at least days.. All and all, a great experience but not one for the faint hearted! AWESOME! We got to the Samaria with a private, rental car so we were independent. We kind of did some trail running there which was very fun. Definitely good are necessary! When you get there, there is a shop to buy bus and tickets, coffees, sandwiches and also shirts. There is also a toilet. Be aware! If you do the whole gorge, you’ll get to the south of Crete where there is only a going to a different spot and from there you go back to your arrival point by bus. There is only one a day at 5.30pm. We actually had more plans for that day but kind of got stuck in the end to wait for the ferry. It then, was a full day trip. It took us only 3hours through the gorge, because of some trail running periods. If we knew better we would have started to turn around and go our way. Nonetheless, it was breathtaking and awesome! In the end they serve fresh beer and freshly squeezed orange juice from their orange trees. Definetly the trip! We just rolled with everything and didn’t regret anything. nice road to true and also to drive true. of course you will find some goats on your way Endlessly spectacular scenery, a and your legs might ache for a few days, but it's it. We got the 5am public bus from Chania, which was maybe a bit early as it's quite chilly in the mountains (take a jumper), it was a cold hour in the dark waiting for the cafe to open / park gates to open at 7am. Then it's about a 6 hour with many refill stops. Not hard a hard walk, all basically down hill, we wore running trainers for the thicker soles, but saw people walking in jeans and normal trainers. Take swimming stuff to get in the sea at the end! Then the to Agia Roumeli and the public bus back to Chania. Very place! Just take a small bottle with you, you can always fill it with underway. And at the end, you will find clear water, stony beach, great to cool of! We booked 2 nights at Omalos town, 5 minutes drive from the Samaria entrance. We started at 9 a.m. , we have thought, it was already late because the Hotel told Us start at 7-8. We eated breakfast first, At the entrace we have paid 10€ /person. We have 1,5 li and some snacks. The 7 Hours journey is mostly descend, so we try our best to keep our Neck elivated from time to time. Anyway we were always on guard for falling stones in case. The Park is good organized , in every 3 or 4 km, station a medic personel. It has an abundant source of drinking water, so you will never get drought. The 1st half of the journey was only more on downhill rough dusty path. The best highlights are the Iron gates and the Old Samaria Village on the 2nd half of the journey. My partner's Hands became swollen because of the walking position and the Saniter told Us to cool off the Hands with cold of Samaria. Once we reached the exit gate, We walked a bit until to the Bus stop and bought the Bus ticket to the Pier area. From the Pier we took the fastcraft boat to Sougia 40mins and from Sougia we took the Bus 1,5 hours back to the Parking area of Samaria National Park to get to our Car. At the End of the Day, we rewarded our trip to a satisfying Dinner. along challenging but worthwhile known for its beauty and dramatic vistas and views...it's actually 17K not 13K as posted!
