Excellent place for a peaceful or proper hike. The road is narrow though, so drive carefully. Yet another sweet spot in the realm of the Sliabh Bloom's. There is a LOT of deforestation going on at the moment so it's less forest park than it once was but the views are breathtaking none the less. Handy looped trails for getting out and about in nature. Plenty of parking and picnic tables. Great through the forest as it’s mostly paved, the final push to the peak of baunreaghcong was tough. Knee high bramble/gross and heather while watching for the numerous holes ready to gobble you up. Overall well worth a visit Nice trail and nature. Great place for a hike with the family. The trail is sometimes a bit hard to find but most parts are well indicated. It helps to follow the trail using GPS too. (Alltrail). The most I loved was the rover side . Omg , it's beautiful. Many pine trees inside , the is not very look . But would suggest keep looking around to explore the roads inside the forest . Please have a look at the videos I have posted Great place to have a especially if you want peace and quiet. 3 different paths to choose from. We only did the shortest one because we have a little one. Free parking! Loads of picnic tables in the parking lot and along the trail. Great place for Hiking. Calm and good vibe Beautiful walk. Easy flat walk. Could be done with toddlers and buggy. Monicknew trailhead and forest recreation area is located in Monicknew woodlands which form the boundary between the counties of Laois and Offaly. The Monicknew trailhead is the starting point for three looped walks which start and finish at the recreation area located next to the spectacular Monicknew Bridge. The long distance Slieve Bloom Way can also be accessed from this point. Whether you are just looking for a short stroll on the flat valley areas or a more substantial hike into the heart of the Slieve Blooms then there is walking option here for you. The shorter looped walks are family friendly and there is a perfect picnic spot by the bridge. Turning into a busy spot at the weekends with the new mobile coffee trailer.
