Imagine walking down a stairwell comprised of just bear raw rocks, and entering a with paintings that are hundreds of years old lit by a hanging chandelier. They also have a building with huge wine casks where you can shop and take a rest. A Great Monastery. Located 10 km north of Serres. It is reached by mountain road. The is large and worth the visit. It was founded in 1270. It was burned, devastated and built again over the centuries. Really worthwhile visiting. Some of the best fresco’s I have ever seen. Especially in the old chapel, but there taking pictures is not allowed. We liked the open attitude of the nuns very much! Interesting place. Very beautiful nature around Have 2 shops for souvenirs and food, book s and icons I Beautiful amazing place. One of the oldest in Greece. Lots has been rebuilt due to fire and aging over the centuries. But as much as could be has been maintained as original as possible. Lovely museum, and lovely nuns. They have a little store to buy things they make like jams and liqueurs. Welcome you in and share some home made bread and Turkish delights. Also enjoy a little trek through the forest down to running rivers and waterfalls surrounded buy massive pencil pines that would have to be 100s if not 1000s of years old. Beautiful near Serres, worth the visit when you are near there! Lovely serenity and excellent upkeep by the sisters there. This in the mountains is amazing. It is also a museum and is extremely well kept. The nuns are so welcoming and informative and there is fantastic mountain spring drinking water available. The main Church is fantastic and you can feel peace and God’s presence not only in the church but in the entire monastery. The is very beautiful with strong energy! You must visit it. You could buy something from the monastery, there is a wide variety and everyone can find something for themselves. It’s a truly beautiful and peaceful place, and the sisters were very warm and welcoming. A friend recommended this in Serres. We went there last Sunday. It was amazing! Besides being the most beautiful I have ever seen, the service was incredibly deep and the atmosphere was divine. I cannot thank my friend enough! We also managed to talk to Gerondisa and get a holy ribbon. The sisters were incredibly joyful and helpful. It was a pleasure to be there. Beautiful place, with serenity at each corner. Nuns are very kind and helpful. Museum is rich in exhibits and we were also served with some nice loukoumides, holu bread and cold water. At the church, frescoes are stunning in details and colors, with some very unusual topics. We saw also frescoes of Serbian King Dusan Silni, his wife Helen and son Uros, because the were aming the bigest donors of this monastery. Unforgetable experience. We really enjoyed.
