We tasted two Croatian and two Napa Valley wines. We enjoyed all of them. We sat outdoors on the deck overlooking the harbor of Trstenik and island Mljet in the distance. It was a warm day with a cooling breeze from the west, a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of wine tasting. This winery was founded by Napa legend Miljenko “Mike” Grgic, the winemaker behind the 1976 Judgment of Paris Chardonnay. Grgic Vina is one of Croatia’s most celebrated wineries. It's near the end of the the Pelješac Peninsula and offers spectacular terrace views of vineyards, the Adriatic coastline, and scattered islands. The tasting featured their two flagships: Pošip, bright and mineral-driven with citrus and stone fruit, and Plavac Mali, structured and powerful with black fruit, herbs, and spice. Both were superb. They also shared their Napa estate rosé and fumé blanc in the tasting we selected. We had reservations and had seats on the terrace. With glasses in hand we soaked in the panorama for about 90 minutes. The service was warm and professional, and though the crowds eventually arrived, for a while it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. World-class with unforgettable views.
