Nice views over the sea. There is a very friendly guide who seems to appear out of nowhere. He loves to give you all relevant information to this place. Entry is free. Opening times are a bit tight. Very interesting archeological site. Of great importance for the culture and of Greece. A wonderful locals who, out of pure pleasure, welcome visitors and briefly introduce them to the place in detail. All recommendations, be sure to visit. Though only partially excavated, Pydna offers an impressive display of her rich in the few -as of yet- revealed architectural remains. Part of the walls is dated back to the 6th century and is attributed to emperor Justinian. A second layer is dated to the 10th century. Both are probably based upon the foundations of the ancient walls, which were likely demolished by the Romans, as this is where they decisively defeated King Perseus of Macedon in 168 BC and his -possibly pretentious- successor Andriskos in 148 BC. What we see today is mostly from its Eastern Roman (Byzantine) period, where the city was renamed as Kitron. Easy to visit with a wonderful guard / caretaker / guide. Once done with the visit, the beach is right there to combine cultural enrichment with sports and pleasure. Amazing place. Such a important part of Greek history.
