Beautiful restored near Mt Olympus, definitely worth a visit Visited in March 2024 This is on the road up into Mt Olympus and is worth stopping by to see. There is a nice walk down to the river which is a beautiful site in these gorgeous mountains. Worth the trip! The old was founded and devoted to the Holy Trinity by Saint Dionysios in 1542. Surrounded by strong high walls with a sizable watchtower, it resembles a small fortress. During various conflicts it served as a shelter for civilians, as well as fighting troops. The was destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its history. It was destroyed in 1821 by Veli Pasha and again by the German Wehrmacht in April 1943. The German military first bombed the and later demolished it with explosives to prevent its use as refuge for Greek resistance fighters. Today visitors can visit the old monastery's ruins just off the road from Litochoro to Prionia. A little hidden gem nestled in the mountain. Loved it here. Such a beautiful partly destroyed during Second World War and partly restored with local and existing stones. Very beautiful unique architecture. Just in approximately 900mm altitude. There is a very beautiful walking path , that you pass through the river to go to the Holy cave! So beautiful… Maybe it is a nice project to rebuild this monastery, BUT they just throw the construction rubble into the nature. It is visible everywhere. A real shame for greece. And at the same time they put signs everywhere on the hiking path that the nature is important and needs to be protected an preserved, aswell as it is not allowed to walk down to the river/waterstream. Because it could damage the nature. If you admonish people about it, than you should be leading by example. If the EU would see this they would not have funded this project. Once in a lifetime worth visiting if you are in the area :) its nice and simple, well.maintained A very interesting place, although makes a heat sad when one reads about the continuous destruction of this place throughout the centuries - one would wish it had thrived without so much damage... Historic Beauty! Great religious site to visit. Dress appropriately, they do also have drapes for free to use if you're not dressed appropriately. Windy road to get to. Plenty of parking. Pay a donation as you enter and light a candle. The is not technically open, and there is quite a bit of construction occurring at the site. But the site is open, and you can walk through and enter the monastery. The site is pretty interesting and worth the walk around if you're near by; wouldn't really go out of the way for the stop though. Beautifully restored in a pristine alpine environment! Just stop at the end of the paved road and walk down the gravel road for not more than 3 minutes! If you want to venture further you can visit the holy cave about 10 minutes walking downhill.
