Varnhem Abbey

One of the places worth a little detour to see is the Varnhem Abbey and it's surroundings. Whilst the cistercian abbey is long gone and only are there to see, the still stands as a beautiful mark from a time long gone. Besides the beautiful architecture there are several Swedish kings buried here, the monks build the with acoustic in mind so make sure you stay for a service. There is a museum at the back of the about the abbey and on the hill above there is a museum about the beginning of Swedish Christianity during the Viking age. There is plenty to see and learn but there is also a lot of restaurants and coffee shops around. Finally it is also a part of the pilgrimage network in Sweden should you want to do a walk. Impressive cathedral like church. Built by the monks in the early 1100 and transformed in the 1600 by Magnus de la Gardie. It holds tombs by early Swedish kings and the de la Gardie family. It also has an Impressive carpet made Agda Österberg well worth a look. A tip is to take a guided tour which will give a lot of extra and also includes the Abbey ruins. Fin kyrka Known from the film Arn. It is interesting if you like religious buildings and ruins. On this day it was closed but in summer it is open and even has fila outside. There is also a small museum at the back. Beautiful old monastery in nice surrounding near Lake Hornborga. Free entrance and free parking. Otroligt vacker och gammal kyrka med nästan 1000 års historiska vingslag vilande över kyrkan. Was für ein müstischer Ort. Tolle Kirche, beeindruckender Friedhof. Sehenswert. Das Womo parkt direkt in der Nähe. Auch der Kaffee und die Zimtschnecke im Klostercafé waren super. Don't forget to visit the Kata exhibition This is one of the first places where monks settled to start their preaching in Sweden. The are very well preserved and clearly marked signs explains the omd ruins. The chruch itself were restored during the 1600s so it is not purely medeival. This is a place everyone who is interested in the swedish history must visit. Inside the Birger Jarl amongst others is buried. No entrence fee to the church. The is sourrunded by the ruin of an old monastery. 300 meters from the Kata gård is located. There is a living house for a woman 1000 years ago exhibited. No entrence fee. Pity wasn’t open on a sunday Very nice landmark with historical buildings around I still haven't been inside the Abbey, but I love the surrounding area: Old meets new in the nearby limestone quarry which was being worked into the 1950s, but (probably) provided building material for the Abbey (and maybe Skara cathedral too). Lovely place to walk around, very peaceful. Was very hit and miss with English information signage however.
