Eagle’s Rock in County Leitrim is one of the most breathtaking and peaceful hiking spots I’ve visited. It’s Ireland’s tallest free-standing rock tower and offers stunning views of the Glenade Valley and the surrounding Dartry Mountains. The hike is about 3 km round trip and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The starts from a small, free car park with an information board. The route winds through open farmland and grassy fields — quite scenic, but also steep, muddy, and very slippery in places. Almost the entire path is covered in sheep droppings, which makes it tricky and unpleasant to at times. It’s definitely not a place to wear sandals or shorts — proper hiking boots and full trousers are a must. This is not a tourist-heavy spot, so it’s wonderfully quiet and ideal for nature lovers and photographers. There are no toilets or shops nearby, so it’s best to bring water, snacks, and anything else you might need. Dogs are not allowed, as the crosses private farmland, and it’s important to stay on the marked route and respect the local landowners. Overall, Eagle’s Rock is a wild and beautiful experience — a true hidden gem in Leitrim. If you're properly prepared, the views and the peace make it well the effort. Highly recommended for a half-day adventure off the beaten track. Really beautiful spot. Unfortunately you cannot hike the which is misleading as there is a very short path about 10-20 metres that leads to a gate at which point it becomes private property. You can get nice photos but it's quite a drive just for some photos. Worth a visit if passing by but not if you want to hike your better to go to Ben Bulben for a walk. A place not to be missed! Access is via a small road where you'll find a small parking area. Eagle's Rock is fully visible on foot, and it's recommended to take a to fully appreciate it! Went there just before sunrise, roads going in to it are a little rough but nothing an ordinary car can't handle. There is a public car park for convenance. It's the hike but I'd warn you, once you pass the tree and the red bucket it's kind of your own until you get to the edge. Took us 3km to the peak and 3km back down. We did it in just over 2 hours. (the incline is what takes the most time at the beginning. Terrain at the top is wet, and muddy so be sure to bring hiking shoes. The view was phenomenal though! The whole area of Dartry Mountains is something to cherish, but Eagle’s Rock has that eerie vibe to it when you look from the top above it (viewing point). The ridge is really sketchy so not the best place for small kids. Also you can’t climb with dogs. All private lands have warning across. The itself is easy at first when starting from car park, then becomes very steep but not so challenging. Once at the hilltop, you’re on your own. Boglands wipe any trails as they change, so you better follow what’s left, and maybe some sheep trails. Make sure to have app or map with you. Well the effort! Start off at the dedicated car park and follow the well defined that zig zags to the top. Bring food and water and I always bring extra layers in case the weather changes. The to the top is well defined but even the fittest people will be huffing and puffing. The views at the top are definitely the effort and you won't be disappointed. 10/10. I thought we could hike and around there a little bit but there was a shield saying „no trespassing“ and we didn’t want to disrespect that, so we parked, took 1-2 pictures and left again.
