This space serves both as a square and a bridge, marking the cultural and artistic heart of Aveiro. Located above the canal in the form of a roundabout, it was modernized in the late 20th century on the site where two older bridges—Ponte dos Arcos and Ponte das Almas—once connected. At the four outer corners of the square stand bronze sculptures representing important figures from Aveiro's cultural and working traditions: a Salineira (salt-harvesting woman), a Marnoto (male salt pan worker), a Parceira do Ramo (woman carrying ceremonial greenery for local festivals), and a Fogueteiro (figure carrying a handheld pyrotechnic device used during celebrations). Together, they reflect the city's close ties to its canals, salt heritage, and festive traditions. Old town of Aveiro is really pretty and there are lots of sights. It only gets busy around 11am Lovely area of Portugal to visit. Very different to other parts of the country. Just look at all the photos and you will see why ! Very beautiful canal! Some say it’s Portugal’s Venice, obviously, they are not exactly the same. Aveiro is smaller with less fancy buildings around. Yet, it is still beautiful, both the canal itself and the city center around it. Worthy for a day trip We went on a boooooat!!! Loved it! Anytime I can go on a boat, I will love it! The boat was so smooth and relaxing, does it to me every time. I would have no problems sleeping! The ride was nice, beautiful scenery and our host, friendly, funny and very informative. This is a must do when in Portugal. This is considered "The Venice of Portugal." Nice ride down the canal. Lucky to have the sun with us for a rainy forecast. Considered their Venice of Portugal. Aveiro, a beautifull place to visit. So pretty, a lot of stores and it was really pretty. We even took a trip with a little boat and it was a 10/10, worth every penny. But there are a lot of tourist but it was just fine since we could walk around without being bumped into.
