Fairytale square, like many in Belgium and the Netherlands. It's kept very nicely, always clean and tidy, a pleasure to walk through. I can't help by stopping and taking a picture every time, by a different corner with a different sky. Grote markt literally means the 'big market', which is the area that lies in the centre of the Aalst district. It is a traffic free zone with few historic buildings around the square, several streets of shopping, eateries and pubs. This place is usually lively, but during the summer time it is exceptionally good with all terraces being occupied by the locals and visitors to enjoy their drinks. City where i spent my youth, will allwqys have a special place in my live. Enjoying a drink with sight on the nice old marketplace, city hall, de borse van amsterdam, statue of Dirk Martens. This is a wonderful attraction when visiting Aalst. Stay long enough to visit the market square on Saturday when vendors are selling everything from fish and meat to clothing and flowers. This was a nice square to visit, but we were there on a Sunday and there was just a gathering of a scouting group or something. It made the square busy, but without much to see for us. We did have a nice drink on a sunny terrace though, which was a relaxed moment. I had the impression that the town was a bit 'quiet'. Second day of the Carnival - with a fantastic parade of brilliantly designed floats which seemed to go on forever. So many participants in dazzling costume and makeup performing choreographed routines to rousing music, real community spirit. Worth the 500 km journey to be here. A beautiful town center with some good restaurants to enjoy the view. The grand place in AALST is a wonderful place to be the ancient dominates the sceneIt is the place where all of the documents with priviliges od the citizens of AALST are kept .... worthwhile to visit. The bounderies of the Gragd Place is consist of restaurants en great cafe's or brasseries where one can sip a beer and anjoy the view Plenty of shops and places to sit. A small but decent amount of foot traffic during corona-times. Very picturesque. I'd come here again to spend an afternoon.
