It was interesting and the museum’s interior architecture made a good point of how difficult it was to establish trades through the Alps. Long story short, theoretically: the Swiss confederation originated from having to maintain peace (against foreign aggression) and moderate feuds (governance at commune level). The “Child labour in the 19th and 20th centuries” exhibition was informative yet darkly depressing – couldn’t imagine how many untold child abuse cases could have happened in their situations. This is a great small museum. Super must see if you're new to CH (or applying for citizenship!). It's also interactive and good for kids as well- probably on of the least boring museums for history in the world, with videos, language samples, life size video "guides" on each floor. The whole is set up as an "alp". It's all super clean and clever and has a visiting exhibit on the bottom floor. It has a tiny gift shop area as well. Schwyz is good to see anyway, because it's where CH got started and you'll just feel like you "get" it all more. Very interesting museum, particularly the part on child labour in Switzerland. It is more about the original Switzerland in its context (Europe / alpine region / 3 Cantons) than a general history of the country, but it is designed intelligently, with text and object exhibits, some videos and some audios. I learned new historical tidbits and really appreciate the hard work that has been done here! The special exhibit (the royals are coming) held some interest too, though not as much. There are lockers (the 2chf coin is needed, but you get it back) and the toilets are impeccably clean. The personnel was charming. For those who enjoys history, I highly recommend the permanent exhibition. It presents how the power was organized in the middle age, the trade routes, especially the ones passing through the Alps, and the motivation behind the beginning of the Swiss confederation. I found very helpful the videos of a person giving a summary and more information in each exhibition section. A vivid portrayal of XIIIth century Europe explained in German, French, Italian and English. The National contextualises extremely well the emergence of Switzerland and the Zeitgeist. There are many interactive games and the collection of medieval weapons and armors is impressive. The staff is friendly and helpful. This would be enough reason to visit Schwyz, however, the village is full of such highlights. If you want to get to know Switzerland in a very original way, this is the place to go. When I was there, I met very friendly and knowledgeable staff and bought a small book on Swiss history that was adding up insanely well to the beautiful, very informative, very intuitive and very interesting exhibition.
