The museum, which is pretty new and free, could be marvellous. However the curators have chosen to to use an on-phone app to tell you about exhibits etc and you have to bring your own earphones - or buy some for 3€ - to be able to hear the info. Without earphones (I had not brought any in and would not pay in principle for yet more unrecyclable waste) you can find nothing out, as written info is almost non-existent. Very disappointing. The Visitor Centre is not immediately visible, as it was built partially underground to maintain the visual harmony of the memorial and the cemetery. Just before you enter, you will come across several interesting trench signs that are definitely worth a moment of your time. As you walk in, you step into a beautifully designed, interactive space. The centre opened in 2018 and is named after General Sir John Monash, one of Australia’s most important military leaders during the First World War. Visitors are given a tablet and headphones at the entrance. These automatically play audio and video content based on where you are in the building. The is immersive, with powerful audiovisual rooms, large video walls, interactive maps and personal stories that bring history to life. The centre does a wonderful job of connecting with younger generations and helping them understand the sacrifices made by Australian soldiers in France. It succeeds in doing this with respect, clarity and impact. For a place with free admission, it offers an incredible amount of valuable information. If you need a short break, there is a café on-site where you can enjoy a drink and a small bite before continuing your journey through the region. Be sure to this place, it is truly worth your time. We easily spent 4hrs here and could have done another two but for the Snow. Have been to the Canberra War Memorial and Albany ANZAC Centre and this is of the same calibre. Wonderful!! My only points of constructive suggestion would be including the role of Soldiers in the reconstruction of the V-B Township, School and Hall and the importance of the location during the 2nd WW. Plenty to keep teens, young adults and older well-engaged. Hats off to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for a well run memorial and beautifully kept all year round. The museum is interactive and immersive where you can engage with each exhibit at your own pace. It seemed like a hidden gem being under/beside the Australian National Memorial, truly impressed and forever grateful for the sacrifices made in WW1. This was our first stop of many. I was not disappointed. I learnt so much from the audio guide which automatically switched from one exhibit to another. Interactive screens also allowed you to hear more in depth information. A must I found the information invaluable as we toured further sites in France & Belgium.
