Yet very peaceful and serene. You will notice the many tiny birds that live there from dawn to dusk. You hear them. Then look out to the direction of where the trenches were located. It's hard to imagine this was where the land was stripped bare by explosives. An excellent and quiet place to visit. An excellent Day Tour so to provide respect for all of those who fought in the 1st and 2nd World War - Lest We Forget. 🌹 🇦🇺 🇫🇷 🌹 Coming from Australia this place was very special to us. Great to learn the history of our fallen hero's. We arrived at 9 am and enjoyed the quietness walking in the cemetery. If your staying in Villers Bretonneux it is a lovely walk through the potato fields to this place.About 2.4 kms each way At 10am the Sir John Monash Centre opened. A beautiful building with many videos on the war history. Bring uour own head phones or you can buy them at the shop. A great little restaurant and good coffee. A place not to be missed. All these young lives lost or returned with severe injuries and mental illness. Very touching to think of their parents so far away receiving such sad news. This Australian WWI to the soldiers that died near Villers-Bretonneax was a wonderful design. It’s always a pity those that fought and survived don’t get a mention anywhere overseas. We are very proud of our ancestors who survived multiple significant battles and proud of what Australia did to help liberate France from the Germans. Don’t miss the John Monash centre. It is really amazing and not easy to see. Lots of world class movies and interactive media. We learnt a lot. Truely one of the best Australian War Memorials away from The AWM in Canberra An amazing and eye opening experience, a must see if you're in the area. Also vist the museum behind the memorial. I would highly recommend it and give yourself plenty of time, a good couple of hours at a minimum. Very well done and extremely moving. Something that is worth the money spent overseas by Australian Government. Remember a family friend who fought in the somme while there. What they went through is unexplainable. A truly humbling place. The museum out the back is worth at least 2 hours to walk around. A climb up the top of the tower has fantastic views of the countryside. This is an absolute must do. Bring headphones, download the app and give yourself at least 6 hours to listen to all of the important information. Amazing place . Very moving to walk up along the grassed cemetery to the huge building . Climb the stairs to tbe top of memorial, look across the whole area. Lovely memorial. The John Monash centre out the back is excellent; head to the and go through the side and out the back. The visitors centre and interactive displays only add to the immense feelings of loss, but of national pride also. Countrymen of all nations will visit these battlefields with their own need for commemoration, but I am very proud to recommend a visit by all the world’s peoples in the hope that we do not wage world war again. I was so moved by our visit to the & cemetery. The whole landscape surrounding it is vast & pristine. The gardens & graves are maintained beautifully. It was silent except for the birdsong, so it was easy to lose yourself in the sentiments shared in the monument & the gravestones. The John Monash Centre is found behind, & beneath the stone wall monument - this is not to be missed. Such a sobering, & significant part of Australian history.
